Shortening the axle doesn't give you more space in the wheel well. It just allows you to run a deeper dish. Generally, folks cut 3" per side and decrease their backspacing by that much. So a 10" wide wheel would go from 7.5" BS to 4.5" BS.
A 325/50-15 will fit... but it's a 28" tire and is wide. You will probably have to hammer the inner fender well, roll the fenders, and probably use an adjustable PHB to center the wheels left and right and perhaps even adj LCAs to center the wheels forward and backward in the wheel well.

I had to do everything JakeFusion mentioned to get my MT 325/50 15 to fit, I even had to grind my calipers to gain clearance, but that was for my pro star wheels.
Im going to try and fit 335/30 17's for street tires this month. Hope all the clearance I made from the MT's make it easy.

I have 325/50 Hooiser DR with a 9" narrowed 3" per side 15x10 wheels w/ 4.5 backspace on my Camaro. 325 is an extremely tight fit, I'd suggest 295/55. I'm planning on switching to the 295 after the 325 are worn out.
