Bow Tie Power

I was at LSfest yesterday and there were a few cars that surprised me. A Mazda Miata, Ford Fairmont (?) and an old station wagon. The type of cars did nothing for me. What surprised me was these cars were using skinny rear tires on what looked like factory wheels, barely did a burnout at all, yet still had great traction and ran some impressive numbers. How?
