I ordered a set of BC Smoothie IIs from DTD and I'm happy with the look so far. (The centers seem to be a bit small for the oval bevel on the wheel but oh well i guess....) and I'm getting a wobble at 55 occasionally. Is this balancing? alignment? The car didn't wobble at all with the old wheels.

 

Check for Zangels thread. She has had this problem and there was defects with the rims.... Ill try to dig it up.

YIKES is all i have to say about that...... Just what I need.... another headache in my life...... Has there been any resolution with this or new news??

 

Its 'most likely' in the balance. Contact our customer care dept and we'll set it up to have it rebalanced for you.

 

You also have to make sure that you get the hubcentric rings. The boyd mounting hole is slightly larger than our hub so they require hubcentric rings. They cost like 4 bucks each and should take care of the problem.

whoa whoa whoa..... hubcentric rings? Why doesn't anyone say that when they sell the wheels?? Where can I find some, what do they cost and what size do I need?

 

When I got my Smoothies I had the same problem, it took 2 different shops to get them balanced enough to where the wheel barely shakes @ 55 now. But now about 9 months later it feels like my back wheels are going out of balance again. It's almost new tire time again anyway so hopefully we will be able to get them re-balanced good enough to run on them again. Also with the groove that is in the Hoops of pretty much all Boyd's wheels, when it starts collecting water you will start to get a shake again or if some dirt gets in that groove it will throw them outta balance.

I really like my Smoothies, but this will be the last set of Boyd's rims that I ever buy.

 

Mine were bent. I sent them back and got new ones.

 

They seem to be riding OK now, not perfect but better. But now I can't seem to get the alum very clean These things have been one big headache. Cars are supposed to be enjoyed, not dreaded.

 

All I can tell you about keeping them clean is go to Eastwood or Flitz and get a polishing kit. I pull mine about everyother month and clean & polish the insides of the rims too. These aren't clear coated rims, so they will get dirty quick.

 

Man these have got to be the biggest pain in the *** wheels in the world!
I have been trying to get mine clean enough to use Zoops on them but Mothers and Flitz wont remove the spots on them.
I have just learned to live with the shakes...

 

i used my new balancer and have no shakes at all and have done a few others and they have no problems at all,as far as keeping clean just find a good metal polish and hit them quickly when you wash the car

 

Any rim shop will carry the hub centric ring. They cost like four bucks a piece. The boyds hub is slightly larger than the F-bod hub so the hubcentric ring is needed to make a proper seat.

Thank God I talk myself out of them last week and got the same ole chrome Z06 wheels. I was so so so close to gettting the Boyd's.

 

A year and a half ago I purchased a set of Boyd Coddington
Wheels. 18" New Waves for my Dodge Quadcab lowrider.

Speak of the devil, as I am writing this I just received a call
from Simo at Coddington saying my third set of wheels will
ship next Thursday.
I'm giving 5 to 1 that that is a lie, but I am putting the cart before the horse here.

When I first received my wheels they were really sweet looking.
I bought them from Coddington because I have such a large
backspacing and was unable to find a good looking wheel with
a 5 on 5 1/2 lug pattern". Stock backspacing wouldn't work with
my lowered truck.

They were great but I had to use a 1/4" spacer in the front to
get the centers over my axel caps.
6 months later one of the wheels welds failed and began leaking.
They replaced it but it took a month and several shipping lies not to mention paying to remount and balance.
4 months later a second and different wheel began leaking at the
welds.
They replaced it too, but it took a month also and several shipping lies not to mention paying to remount and balance.
2 months ago, a third and different wheel, same thing.
This time, They tell me that those wheels won't work on my
vehicle, and they don't want to keep rehooping them.
Would I be interested in picking a different wheel?

I told them, I picked the wheel I have because it was what I wanted, anything else would be a second choice.
I paid $2800 for these wheels but they would only offer me
the distributors price in refund. About a $1200 dollar loss.
So, against my better judgement I picked out a second style
of wheel.
I waited 5 weeks for the Harm wheels to come in and of course
a couple of lies about when they would ship..
While I was waiting, the 4th and final original wheel started
leaking. So now I have 2 wheels going all the way down
every night.

The Harm wheels showed up 2 weeks ago.
One was damaged in shipping and they were all made wrong.
They made them with stock backspacing, and the wrong hoops,
and they sent the wrong centers. They didn't even take the trouble to look up the original order for the proper backspacing.

Today UPS picked up the second set to return them and as I said
I just received a call telling me my third complete set will supposedly ship next Thursday. I don't have alot of confidence
in this order being right either.
I can't tell you how much time and money having a set of Coddington Wheels has cost me, but I hope you all will take
this story to heart and

AVOID BOYD!!!!!!

Hello All,
I was led to this thread from the Hotrodders bulletin board
and I thought I would add this to your thread.
Since I wrote this a week ago, I have received an email
from Simo at Coddingtons telling me that they can't make
the date because they don't have 8" front hoops.
I will have to wait 3 more weeks for the front wheels.
I knew he was lying before as I stated in my post.

They have never met a delivery and folks if you are smart
you will AVOID BOYD

Damn Boyd's got alot of **** happening with his wheels lately. In somewhat recent memory I remember hearing that Boyd, or part of Boyd Wheels (the fordged ones) sold out... could that be part of it?

my 20" boyds that I had on the Sierra looked good, but the chrome was thin and cheap looking. They were cast wheels, and if you looked at the right spot where the hoop/center met up (if it was 2+ piece wheel.... they were cast/chromed) you could see how thin the top chrome layer was... showd copper...

I was thinkign about the smoothies for my car too, but not after seeing everyones problems with them as of lately. Todd is doing a good job of taking the rims back etc, but ****, Boyd Coddington wheels should get the **** fixed and fixed right. They've been considered one of the best wheel makers out there for a while. Guess thats why I keep seeing more iForged and Intro, etc floating around...
