Default Replacement Tires...any recommendations?

Hello, I'm a new member of the forum and a new owner on a beautiful 1996 Trans Am WS6. The car has been modified to around 400-425 horsepower and has adjustable coil over shocks as well. I am looking to replace the current Nitto drag tires with more of a summer only performance/road tire. It has the original WS 6 rims with P275/ZR40 tires on it currently. I'm looking for a good replacement that still has the sticking power but a slightly mellower ride. Any suggestions would be welcomed!! Thank you!

If you want a long-lasting (15,000+ miles) tire that also sticks very nice......put a 315 Nitto 555 Extreme (NOT THE DRAG RADIAL) on your factory 17 x 9 rims. I did that for 12 years....works perfect in every way.
And it looks much better than a little 275 tire. Put the 275 Nitto 555 Extreme (NOT THE DRAG RADIAL) up front.

Great combo....lasts so damn long too.......I had 500 RWHP/500 RWTQ for the whole 12 years with my 427ci. It gave me better traction than a true drag radial (BFG). And with the Nitto 555 Extremes......amazing grip in wet conditions.

Oh....I also used 315 Goodyear GS-D3 tires in the rear, with the 275 Nitto 555 Extremes up front......also a great combo.

But the Goodyear GS-D3s are hard to find and expensive.

Thanks!! I have Nittos on the front and I was looking at the Extremes last night, thank you for confirming that! Plus now I just have to replace the rears...frees up some $$ for other things. Thanks again, I appreciate the help. I just purchased the car last weekend so as I get into it further I will more than likely be looking for some more suggestions. Glad I found you guys!!

Go 315/35/17 in the rear....you will happy you did. Looks much better and gives you much better traction.........dry and wet.

I just ordered a pair for the rears, I went big with the 315's too. I'll post some pics of her once they're on. Thanks again!

Some tire places might say they won't mount them on a 9 inch rim.....but most will. Tire Kingdom did my first set of 315's.....

It's also an ancient design. Plenty of other tires available with more grip and equal wear characteristics for less.

Waiting to see pics on 9" stock rims, I recently purchased a set of Nitto G2's, 275 up front and went 285 out back as I thought that was widest I could go without rubbing.

Nope.....315's on 9" rims......all it took on my car was literally 4-5 smacks right on the rub spot that the tires made when I went for a drive after putting them on. They barely rubbed in hard turns. After the smacks.....no way to make them rub.

I like the Federal SS595 I got for my car. I hear the RSR are better but I was cheap and daily drive my car so I didn't want to spend a lot. I have the 275/40/17 on some 94 Firehawk wheels. They bulge a bit because the wheel is only 8.5" wide. They would look great on a 9-9.5" wheel.

Joe:
I can't tell exactly what wheels you have on in your pic. I have exact same color combo in a 2002 SS. Currently I have the stock OEM wheels but looking to upgrade the appearance.
Thanks.
