Default 99 Trans Am Tires

Getting my 30th Anniversary Trans Am rebuilt. Has the same tires it did in when I bought it in 2002 and only put about 800 miles on them. What a waste. Now I need to get some new ones, I’ll go with the same size to fit the 30th anniversary rims (275/ 40ZR17) unless someone has a better sized tire that will do better with the car and keeping the stock rims. I should be around 400-450 wheel hp. Won’t be a daily driver. Weekends and occasionally a drive out of town for a weekend. No track racing. Was thinking about going with some Nitto G2’s? But I knew you guys could probably point me to a better tire if needed. Thanks for any help.

Since you went to Nitto, the G2s' are the best for your application. My preferences since getting rid of the OEM Goodyear tires are Nitto 555s' and B.F.Goodrich 'G-Force' for about 15 years now. All mine are mounted on rims and put on the car as applicable to what I'll be doing. The Nitto 555 seem better in straighline traction and OK in the rain, the BFGs' are better cornering traction and great in the rain.

If you drive it that little per year, doesn't sound like it ever sees rain, and you're in a warm climate, go with the Nitto NT05. VERY sticky tire with great performace! They're only supposed to last 10K miles or so, but sounds like you'll never get that many miles before they'll need replacing due to age too. I've got a set on my 400 RWHP garage queen (unfortunately) and can HIGHLY recommend them under all 3 of those conditions!

Ok one more thing I can’t seem to find much info on. My original tires have a 93w on them with the new ones being a 102w. Does the extra load do anything negative to a sports car since it’s probably not needed? I don’t see it helping. But I’m asking you guys because I have no idea. Thanks for any help

The extra load tire has a stiffer construction. You won’t notice the difference. The contact patch may be slightly rounder.
