On a '98 A4 Z28, do I need to modify anything if I go with the 17X11 ZR1 wheels?

Depends . . . sometimes you will need to do some inner wheel well massaging with a big f'ing hammer, and re-undercoat. If you are lowered may need to roll the quarter lip, although TA's have wider wheel well.

Do a search, a ton of info out there.

Also depends on what rear tires you get. Nitto's 315/35 fit about 1 inch smaller on an 11 inch rim. The BFG drag radials are a little bigger, you'll have to grind out the rubber jouncer and the aluminum plate about 1/8th inch to avoid rubbing.
