Default chrome/alum.

Hi! I'm new to this forum and didn't find what I wanted in search. I'd like to have opinions as to the pros and cons of polished aluminum/chrome on street wheels. Thanks.

Chrome is a lot easier to maintain than alluminum unless there is clear coat on the alluminum wheels which is odd for aftermarker wheels. Chrome is more reflective than polished alluminum if that is something that you want. If you love to polish like I do, than get alluminum. It is really a matter of what will match the rest of your car. Can't go wrong with eighther.

aren't polished alluminum wheels also more light weight? I wonder how mush lighter if you were to compare 18" z06 chrome with polished alluminum?

I'd say at least 10lbs, and that's being conservitave. i had a hard time believing it when i first picked the two up, but that's being easy on the chrome wheel.

If you're interested at all in performace on your car, don't go chrome. They're VERY pretty, but they also have a lot of parasitic drag due to the weight of them.

That's comparing two Z06 wheels:mine was a 18" AFS Z06 Aluminum wheel, and my buddies were a 18" chrome Z06 motorsport wheel

Polished wheels are cheaper but are harder to take care of and takes a good polishing and i mean a good polishing to make it look as get as chrome and also most if not all aftermarket wheels that come polished dont come with a clear coat do to the fact that if you put a clear coat of some sort on a polished wheel it will haze up. Chrome on the other hand is easy to clean (soap & water) shines great even if a lil dirty but also a little bit more pricey. Its up to you what you choose if you dont like spending a long time cleaning your wheels and polising them then get the chrome but if you dont mind and like to polish then get the polished wheel. Also the price between chrome and polish isnt that big of a difference. So its all up to you and good luck w/ you search and hope u find the right wheel.

my Boyd coddingtons are polished. They look nice, but are a pain in the **** to keep clean. (non-clearcoated) I wish they came chromed.

Sorry this is offtopic, but I didn't want to start a new thread for one quick question. Are the y2k wheels that came stock on Corvettes polished or chromed? If polished are they clear-coated? Thanks!

back to the non clearcoated polished wheels, i bought a set of polished wheels and had them cleared before i even put my hands on them. it was worth the 50 bucks that i paid my dad friend at a dealer to do for me. but goodluck finding a dealer that will set you up to get wheels cleared for 50 bucks for 4

All chrome wheels are a variance of metal that goes through a dipping process to "chrome" it

so chrome plated aluminum would be the best of both worlds. easy to clean and light weight. is this right?

But also alot more prone to the chrome "chipping" off....If you want pretty wheels, get chrome....if you want high-performance wheels, get a aluminum wheel, plain and simple.

Then again, if you're willing to spend some $$$$$, there are some aluminum wheels out there that are VERY close in polish to a chrome wheel(aero i-forged, simmons, fikse)
