I would do it with a 1500 or higher.

I agree with Aaron - 1500 is the minimum I would go. Unless you're talking about completely removing the clear coat - but I can't imagine why unless you're going to be repainting the wheels or something.

You are going to have to polish the ALOT after you do this if you want a good appearance. as long as you finish with 2000 you will be fine.

I use steel wool, then I use chrome polish and this makes the wheels bling. (stock chrome 16" snowflakes)

I would not touch polished clearcoated wheels with sandpaper. They are already polished, so why would you scuff up the polish. If your wanting to strip the clear off of the wheels, then you can get several different products that will do it chemically. Eagle One makes a wheel cleaner for nonclearcoated aluminum wheels that is nothing more than acid. It`s called Mag Wheel Etch cleaner. There is also aircraft stripper you can find at your local auto parts store and then also some stuff called Peel Away that is specifically designed to strip clearcoat from wheels. It can also be found at some auto parts stores or you can check out your local autobody supply stores for something as well.
Once you strip them, if you want to polish them to an almost chrome like finish, then you will need white rouge polish and a buffing wheel. You can convert a bench grinder into a polishing machine with the purchase of some buffing wheels and adapter. There is a company that sells all the stuff you need to polish aluminum along with various other metals. They are called Eastwood.
