grip of 555R's How well do Nitto 555R DR's grip on the street? I read before that with these, you really need to heat them (burnout) good to get them to grip well. On the street, this is not always possible/desirable. Do they then, on the street w/o a burnout, not grip well? How much better do they grip (unheated) than a set of good street radials?
It's my understanding that the 555R's are a dual compound design. When colder, they are harder, grip less, and allow the improved (less) wear (and thus mileage), but when heated, they are softer, grip more, and thus wear faster.

They grip the least of all the drag radials but they are still not to bad. With all the DRs I have tried, they get sticky and stay sticky for acouple of days after getting heated. And then they sort of glaze over and stiffen up. Being easy one them (nittos), they will still only last about 15,000 miles.

Are you judging that with your current mods because I dont see how a whole lot will grip with what you got. With a stock or a bolton car the 555r's work great on the street, mine do, they grip really well. I am going on about 7k on this pair and they show no signs of wear yet.

I have 315 Nitto DR's on my car, and after driving on them for 10 minutes, they're plenty heated up and stick to run, or you can just smoke them up and get them hot, but They VERY sticky after your average drive out to the track or local racing place.
Nittos really depend on the power level the car makes. I had a bolt on only car that had Nittos last for 15k miles. They gripped way better than a non DR.
Then I was cam only. I would spin the **** out of them in first and barely second. By then, they were hot enough and grabbed really good.
Then I drove a 408 Trans Am making over 500 rwhp with a set of Nittos. That was a joke! It would sping through third and into 4th.

So the 555R's cold (aka without burnout) grip better than really good street radials? I just don't want the situation of you're at a light, and then some ricer pulls up next to you, and a sec or two later it goes green, and your tires are cold and don't grip well... Is this not really a problem with the 555R's?
Get the Nittos i have heard great things about them and I plan on purchasing a set as well when I install my gears but I have been warned to be careful not to snap the 10 bolt.
I have ran my 315 nitto for 2 summers almost and they are getting to the point where they need to be replaced. When it was stock, I never heated them when I raced. Now that i'm over 400 RWHP, they are pretty worthless on the street from a dig, but from a small roll, like 25 or so, they seldom spin. My car is not a daily driver so all the miles I put on these where pretty much me and someone messing around, so they where spun alot and i still had them on for 2 summers. I recently was caught in a bad rainstorm and I almost pulled over on the interstate, because the tires would let loose in 6th gear if I wasn't carefull. Even going around corners I would have to be carefull so the car would stay mostly straight. Don't get me wrong, I would buy these again in a heart beat. Forgot to mention, I recently was at the track on these bald nittos and I was still pulling 1.900 60 foots.
