Is Traction better with 315's on a 17x9.5 or better with a 285?

Is Traction better with 315's on a 17x9.5 or better with a 285? I know the 315's look meaner but is there any traction difference between the 2 on a 17x9.5 rim?
It only obvious that if you have a wide tire on a small rim the contact path will be smaller than normal and not safe. Plus they weigh more.

We have a 315 on a 9.5 and it isn't bulging as much as it did on a 9" rim.
Can't really compare traction since we ran 2 different tires,
285/40/17 Kumho 712 vs a 315/35/17 BFG KD.
