Good AutoX Wheel/Tire Combo?
Looking for recommendations on a good wheel / tire combo for a stock (for now) '00 TA. I ran Falken Azenis on my last car, but it was a low HP, FF car ('05 Scion tC). It's going to take some getting used to the difference b/t that and a high HP, FR, but I figured I'd be better off starting out with good tires.
As far as the wheels go, I just want something light and cheap. They don't have to be pretty. For tires, I'm willing to put down $700-$800 for a good set.
I will be dumping the stock 10-bolt (currently w/ bad bearings) for a 12-Bolt and the stock shifter for a Pro 5.0 before the car sees the track, but have no immediate plans for engine upgrades.

Which Kumhos / Yokos specifically? I had 225/40/18 Kumho Ecsta ASX's on my old street wheels. They were great... for street tires, but I wouldn't race on them. TireRack has Kumho Ecsta Supra 712's in 245/50/16, but they're cheaper than the ASX's. Out of all the Kumho & Yoko tires (in 245/50/16) on TireRack, the Yokohama AVID V4S have the best rating, but I don't know any more about them.
Any idea on wheels?

In my opinion the best Kunho street tire is the Kunho exscta MX tires. im running them on 18" ZO6's and they work pretty damn well. Also the local outox guys have the same opinions about them tires. That is where i got the idea to get them tires. As far as wheels im getting rid of the zo6's and getting 17/11 zr1's with the 36mm offset all the way around. Then im hoping that nitto makes the new NT01 tires in 315's. Damn good setup for autox. If you want a good in depth response to this question then you should try FRRAX.COM. Hopefully that helped.

It all depends what AX class you are running, and whether you want tires also useable on the street. The best tire for grip hands down are the ones I'm using: 25x13x16 Goodyear Sports Car special slicks in bias ply. But they are not DOT approved, and not legal for AX classes below Prepared. Best DOT tire is Kumho V710, with Hoosier A3S04's or A3S05's very close, maybe better on stock springs.

Hoosier R3S04 - just below the other two; it lasts longer because it is a harder compound (I got FTD on my first run with them, and ended up getting somewhere near 80 runs total)
Kumho Victoracer - the "economical" race tire; these were my first tires. I loved them, because you got performance almost as good as the others (maybe .5 seconds slower, on a bad day), but they LAST. I got about 1.5 years before mine went away - and I simply heat cycled them, they still had rubber!

I've been very impressed with the Nitto 555RII tire. Great on the street (though gives a harsh ride since the sidewalls are so stiff) and actually pretty good in the rain, which surprised me.

For now I think I am going to buy another set of stock wheels and fit them with 245/45/16 Victoracers. I haven't decided yet what to replace my stock tires with.

For tires: It appears the tire of the year this year was Kumho Escata V710. However I strongly urge you to wait until next year before you buy tires because race tires age quickly and will get very hard over the winter. There are ways to sucessfully store them, but I have not yet been sucessfull at it.

I've now decided to buy bigger wheels for street use and use my current stock set for AutoX with Victoracers. When they wear out, I will switch to 712's or Hoosiers. By then I should have a good feel for the car and be wanting to add more power.
