What size of tires will fit on 17X10 rims and what will fit on 17X8 rims?

8" rim = 245/45ZR17

10" rim = 275/40ZR17

Cool, that's what I thought but I wasn't for sure on the 10's how big you could go. Wasn't for sure if you could go with a 285 or 295.

You could jump to a 285 or even the 295, the trip would be getting the right sidewall height.

Does anyone know the exact size tire to get if I went with a 285 or 295?

actually im pretty sure its more like 295ish

8'' - 245

9''- 275

10''-295/305

11'' = 335

unless you like running a stretched sidewall. but since this isnt a 240sx or drifting forum, i doubt peopel will be stretching tires in here for...any reason.
i woudl assume (ASSume) most peopel on this board would be interested in runnign a tire wider than the wheel, (in which case i have seen 275 e/t streets shoved on oem 8'' wheels. however different tires have differnt sidewalls, and obviously a 3 ply sidewall 275 width UHP tire will NOT fit on a 8'' wheel)

heres some quick questions

1) what are you using the tires for

2) a 10'' wheel i would guess is going on the rear, so i ask

a) what type of tires (specific as possible) are you considering using?

b) are you tryign to put as much tire as physically possible on the wheel for launching purposes over cornering purposes? (too much tire on a wheel will create a sloppy feeling under hard cornering, but if drag racing is your main concern i dont think you will care)

or is this a daily driver setup where you will just want a good lookign and performing tire on your wheels?

the more you can tell us, the more we can help you accomplish your goals.

judging by your sig i woudl say you have a 4th gen. im guessing you have proper size/offset for clearance i would say either will work, with a 295 you get a tad more tire, and it would be more properly fitted to the wheel, so the choice is purely up to you. but you would probably want a 35 sidewall. i may be incorrect but i beleive that is the proper aspect ratio for a tire of that width on a 4th gen.

Yea, the 10's would be going on the rear, I love straightline power and never take corners very fast, it's my DD car but I don't drive that far anywear I go so it doesn't matter I'd like to go as wide as possible, I'm overpowering my rears now and wanted to go with a 17X11 rear but can't find a wheel I really like that's offered in a 17X11 so went with 17X10's, I'm planning on putting a high performance summer tire on, it depends on how big I go to which one I put on, probably Kumhos but not for sure yet.

That my friend is careless advice . . . 275, REQUIRES a 9" minimum wheel . .

and a 315, on most brands requires a 10.5" wheel . . .

Just because you are willing to disregard manufactures recommendations does not mean you sould poorly encourage people to do the same.

I stand by what I have researched:

On a 8" wheel to maintain correct diameter a 245/45ZR17 is the ONLY tire that fits.

On a 10" wheel to maintain correct diameter a 275/40ZR17 is the ONLY tire.

No if you don't mind inaccurate (although minor) speedo readings a 285/40 ZR17 can be run, and unfortunately I do not know of any one that makes a 295/40ZR17 tire or a 305 that would work . . . .

oh snap, i better go take my 245/40r17's off my racecar, and my dailydriver with 8'' wide wheels, they dont fit!!1 you can fit many sized tires on a 8'' wide wheel, as far as putting wider tires on ive seen up to a 275 e/t street, it all depends on 1) sidewall strenth 2) the ACTUAL width of the 8'' wide wheel / ACTUAL width of the 245-whatever width tire 3) sidewall you have to work with.

On a 10" wheel to maintain correct diameter a 275/40ZR17 is the ONLY tire.
i dont nkow about all that, although that is an easy size if your tryign to sell tires...

No need to be smart ***.

I do not sell tires, never have and never will, I just stress the manufacturer's recommendations, they are all on the internet for you to view, on www.tirerack.com I don't make this **** up.

Race tires and street tires are totally different animals - that the original poster did not ask.

What the hell do you mean by ACTUAL wheel width??? A 8" wheel is 8" wide!

Granted yes every tire manufacturer's 245 series tire is not always going to be exactly 9 1/2" wide but they'll all be close . . .

There is absolutely no point in cramming a 275 series tire that is 11" wide onto a 8" wide wheel, that's just friggin insane. So be it if you feel it is OK for your car.

Just becasue you've "seen" something installed doesn't make it right.

I've seen people jump off a bridge . . . So is that OK?

The rim dimensions I'm looking at are
8" - 17X8 5-120.65 41P
10" - 17X10 5-120.65 38P
I believe these should fit just fine.
I'm looking at getting 245's for the front and 295's for the rear. Does anyone know what the proper sidewall size would be for these two sizes?

I've got 315-35-17 Sumitomo HTR Z on my BC Smoothie 2's 17x10 with no problems at all. They don't look much different then the same tire on 17x11 ZR1's that I had previously.

Well I found some nice 255/40-17's so I'll probably just go with that on front but I can't find anything for 295's.

I just talked to discount tire today and the guy I talked to said that 315's will fit just fine on a 10" rim. I hate to just run a 285 because that's only one size larger than I'm running now and I just can't justifying buying the rims if I can only step up one size on the tires. I also hate to run a different size on front and rear but if I can separate the sizes quite a bit then I'd like to do it.
