Default NT-555 vs.NT555R

Is there a big difference between the 555 and the 555R. The reason why is because the 555 comes in 285 and the 555R doesn't. Just want a wide tire.

Nitto's website says the 555R's come in 285/35. Also the R's have increased tread on the ground, the 555's have more canals.

I'd say the 555R's would hook much better than the 555's.

oh ok. what's your width? if you have like 17x10 you might be able to graduate to 315s. If you have 17x9s or 17x9.5s, i would go with 275s.

Sorry couldn't be of more help.

the diffrence is the 555R's hook....if you have 17's do a 315 if you have 18's do a 305 depending on the width

I used the nitto 555R's in the back all summer on my car since I was going to the track almost every weekend for car club and they were ok. I felt a difference in sidewall and you have to be carefull in rain if they are cold. I wouldn't run them at all in the winter, plus they throw every rock around up and rocks stick to them like glue. The 555's are not a Drag radial, so there is no comparison. If the car is taken to the track every once in awhile or alot, get some cheap wheels and throw the 555r's on, the 555R's are only a 15,000 mile tire. If the car is driven alot and you want some that will last and hook reasonably good the 555's will do it and can be driven all year.

I have the stock 2000 rims 17X9.5 I think. The 555R comes in 275 to 315 and I wanted something bigger then 275s. Any suggestions?

I wouldn't run anything higher than a 285 on a 9.5" rim.

I run the RII's and love them 275's no traction problems. The price difference is huge as well. You can get 17x275x40 for $160 where the 18's cost twice as much literally. The bigger tire might look nicer but your gonna pay double
for it.

The R's obviously will hook much better though the treadwear is 100 vs 300 on the std. 555's.

I've had the 555's and the 555RII's. The RII's are designed for road racing/auto-x and have a really stiff sidewall giving the car a very harsh ride on bumpy roads.
The 555's are a decent street tire but don't hook at all (at least didn't for me and I was running 275/40/18 on my old C5's).
The RII's grip like there is no tomorrow around corners and have a pretty good amount of grip going straight, but shouldn't launch as good as the 555R since the R has softer sidewall allowing the tire to wrinkle a bit on the sidewall.
Since the R looks identical to the RII, I always get people asking me why I am running Drag Radials on all 4 corners,

Bumping this thread because I am debating what to get for my new wheels, 555 or 555R. I am definitely using 555's up front, thinking of getting 555R's for the rears. My questions would be:

Will 555Rs on the rear hurt handling any? Is there any noticeable difference?

Is a 555R overkill for my car? It is an LT1, A4 with 3.23s, cold air intake and catback, maybe 250 rwhp or so, low 14s/high 13s in the 1/4. Mainly a street car which sees the track just a few times a year.

The tires on it now are Mastercraft Avenger HP 245/50R16s, probably not a top quality tire. The lack of traction can be frustrating, these tires often break loose on the 1-2 upshift under hard throttle, and can't do any better than a 2.1 60' at the track. Like I said, track use is not a huge priority but the short time tells the story. Can anyone give me a sense of whether the regular 555s might give me enough grip for my application or will I still be disappointed? Obviously I would like to run 555s all around if possible due to the increased tread life. Size will be 275/40R17. Thanks for any input.

i have had both the regular 555's and the 555r's which i have on the back of my camaro now and the r do have a softer sidewall so i can feel the tire roll on turns. i had the 555's on a mustang and they hook better than i thought they would. went from spining 1st and 2nd on dunlops to just geting a few barks in 1st they it would hook.
i did see a dumb *** with a 98 cobra with drags radials on the front lol.
