Default Balancing the tires.

I had my tires balanced yesterday. I told them use the sticky weights so it wouldn't mar up my mint chrome rims. Still has a vibratation above 75mph, but they fixed it under 75 mph. Should I take the car back to them? Or should I live with it because that's the best they can do with sticky weights. I refuse to get the ugly weights that will mar my rims.

It might not be a rim at all, but I would definitely go back, or just go to Discount. It is free.

Balancing at Discount is NOT free unless you purchased the tires and had them installed there originally. Check for rocks stuck in your tires. Those will throw the balance off and give you vibration. Also make sure the lugs are torqued properly. Did they put tape weights on only the inside edge of the wheel or on both inside and behind the face of the wheel? Most shops can only do static balancing(weights on the inside edge only). They aren't as accurate as other types of balancing and can still have some vibration. Road force balancing is the best but not many places have that type of equipment.

Sticky wieghts or not they should not "vibrate". They balanced them wrong.

also if they didnt clean the wheel very well then they could have flown off. go back and tell them you want the wheels balanced with clip on weights( if they use the correct type of weight for the wheel the scractching will be minimal) and stick on weights on the inner part of the wheel barrel. and if that doesnt work try to find a shop with a road force balancer ( some dealerships)

Road Force balancers are awesome, we have one at our dealer. If you have a vibration, that thing will find it weather is just a simple balance, tire problem, wheel problem, etc. It can even tell you to reposition the tire on the wheel to get the best weight distribution.

road force balancers are nice but they are a pain in the *** sometimes. turning tires on wheels over and over gets annoying. More often than not they are unneeded too. a standard balancer should be able to balance out just about any wheel/tire combo no matter what type of weights your using, unless there is a tire or wheels problem, which you can spot without a road force machine if you decent at what your doing

You coul dhave thrown a belt in the tire which would cause a very noticeable vibration but usually around the same speed.

makes sure they did a dynamic balance ( hammer weight and tape weight on inside) and not static(tape weight on inside) dynamic gets a better balance

It depends on their equipment. Most can only to static as they are not able to do dynamic. Most shops around me can only do static.

If it makes any difference, they are the stock 16" chrome wheels. Mint condition, they aren't bent(unless they are bent and you can't tell from looking at them), and the tires are 245/50/R16 Kuhmo Estaca's, with about 1/3rd of the tread left on them.

You can jack the front of the car up and just spin the front wheels by hand and look at the inner and outer lips of the wheels while your spining them to see if theyre bent. For the rears you can just jack the car up and put it in gear while observing the wheels.

Okay, I MIGHT HAVE figured out the mystery. When I first got these tires, I let my dad drive the car for a day. He ran over a nail, and had to get a plug put in one. He had it plugged that day, and told me the next day. So I forgot about that until I was talking with him last night about what was throwing them out of balance. Seems resonable, doesn't it?

A little bit, but a tire plug is not very big or heavy. There would possibly be a little "nub" that would need to be worn off.

If they patched the tire (dismounted it) and best guessed the weight location that is a different story . .

Took it back to them, and they rebalanced the tires. I can still feel something at 100+mph(and yes I do have a stretch of vacant interstate I run on), but its good enough.

And these guys balancing your tires aren't the least bit suspicious as to why you're bitching about 75-100mph vibrations?

Well you do get there faster. I cut my commute from 1 hour to 35 minutes.
