Default MT ET Street 255/50-16 or 275/40-17 better?

My street traction is terrible. Which tire will be better overall?
I have stock 16 wheels and 17x9.5 ZR1s. Weather is not a factor.

You're only looking for street traction and not drag strip? For just street driving only the 275/40/17's will handle better with the shorter sidewall. For racing the 255/50/16's will be better. They have more sidewall that gives more cushion when launching and can grab better. I have the 16's on my drag wheels and they're awesome. I wouldn't want to drive with them on the street all the time though. They have very soft sidewalls and the car moves around alot with them on.

What would you recommend for street then? My commute is only 14 miles and I will not use the car in rain. I want the best grip for the street without severely affecting handling. BFG DR or Nitto's instead and which size?

I'd go for a super soft compound normal street tire if you want cornering grip too. Look for a tire with a 300 or lower tread wear and it will be a REAL soft compound that will grip well. BFG KD's are supposed to be very good. You could also go with the Nitto 555RII's that have the same compound as the DR but have a stiff sidewall for autocrossing.

He might be better off with the Falken 615s for the same price, much less prone to regular driving heat hardening, and maybe better wear. They only make them in 274/40 17 though.
