Default So if my stock size is 275/40/17 on a 9" wheel...

Why do people still use the same size on a 9.5" wheel? Wouldn't you use a 285/40/17? Is the stock size actually too big or would a 285 rub or what?

Yea, they can, the problem is with a 285 the height of the sidewall doesnt completely make up for the extra width of the wheel, so they still appear taller than a 275 40 making the rim look a tad smaller. Its no big deal, I have 275/40/17's on the front of mine and 285's on the back and the back is taller.

It appears the difference in OD is 25.6" (275) vs 26.0" (285).

I was going to run the 275 but was just curious about this since i'll have 1/2" more wheel to work with. Not sure if there would be any noticeable difference between the two sizes though.
