Default Probably going to be switching wheels...

Hey guys,

Thought I'd bring this in here. I've got the AFS 17 x 9.5'' Black ZR1s on my 02 pewter Z and although I like the look, I think it's time for a change. I think the black looks menacing and different, but I'm starting to get tired of them. Don't get me wrong, I still like them, but I want something new now. I'm thinking about going for either some chrome ZR1s or some chrome Z06s. I know that many people have these wheels (and some of you will say they're played out), but that's fine with me. The reason for that is because they're classic and they look amazing. I want to keep the looks of the car simple, clean, and classy, and I think that chrome wheels will accomplish this. Either way, I think I'm going 17 x 9.5 (maybe 10.5s or 11s in back if I get ambitious) because I'm just a college guy and don't want to pay for 18s or the tires. However, I would prefer the look of the 18s if I got Z06s. Oh well.

What do you guys think? Any pics of pewter/silver Camaros with chrome ZR1s? Any suggestions or other ideas? I'm going for the clean look, like Silver02TA or SS LS1 MI has on their cars.

Gunmetal Zr1's may also look pretty nice on the Pewter.. Just a thought.

Since you don't want/ can't get 18's, then the Z06's are out. The 17" Z06's just don't look good. I'd go with some chrome ZR1's, 17x11's in the rear if you can.

Hey Scotty...I always loved your old car with the black wheels, but haven't been too fond of them on the pewter one. Anyhow, with the prices for TT2s from tomzwheels, how can get you not include the 17x9.5/11 setup? And, unless something has changed, are 18s really that much more per tire than 17s? Bottom line, your car looks 100x better than stock now, so save up a little more and get what you really want. Otherwise you won't be happy with this next upgrade either..good luck!

Okay guys, after looking tonight at some pics of different cars and chrome wheels, I might be set on some ZR1s. I've already had them in silver (came with my other red car when I bought it), then black which made the transition onto the new car, and now I think I want them in chrome. In my opinion, they are just THE classic wheel for 4th gen Camaros. So simple, yet so stylish.

My only problem now is where to get them from. I'll most likely go through Tomzwheels, but the company is what I'm unsure of. I know there's two styles: the GM/SLP style with more rounded-edged spokes, and the AFS-style type with the more squared, flatter spokes. There's also the kind with the deep lugged center, but I'm not concerned about that. Here's a picture of the OE Concepts style which I think I like:

I believe they're on Jake's car too:

I just ord'd some chrome ZR1s - 9.5 / 11 combo from Tomz Wheels. The OE DConcepts 9.5s are on backorder until at least July. They offered a different brand of wheel - I took it - I hope they are what I am looking for!

Dammit.

I guess whenever I order, I'll be waiting a bit. That's okay, get a few more paychecks in the bank to pad the account before I go blowing money on wheels and tires. But... in that case, I might have to get some 11s in back.

Please do. About the spoke design, the more rounded ones look the best. You can just tell that the more flat/ squared off ones are replicas.

I believe it's all in personal preference really. I agree that the rounded ones look great, but I also love the more sharp style because it just adds a more modern edge to the classic ZR1 look. I believe it is AFS who makes the sharper style, so it's between them and OE Concepts for me right now.

Scott, based on your desire for a 17" wheel I would suggest the ZR-1's. The chrome just looks awesome on a pewter car and the ZRs have that clean classic look you are going for. The ZO6s look poor in the 17" version as do the AR Rebels with that overly large stepped lip. The AR 18" Rebels have a whole different look with the fat lips but then you would need the $$$ for the 18" wheels again.

The ZR1s would be my first choice for chrome or TT2s for a polished look and your car will be smokin'.

That is the decision I came to. TomzWheels gave me a kick butt quote on a set of the 18" AR rebels but they did not have the tires to fit - only had a 285 / 30 / 18 (need a 295 / 35 - 18). So I went with the "Factory Reproduction" ZR1s vs the OE Concepts ZR1s. Has anyone come across these in a thread anywhere? All I can find is AFS and OE Concepts? I am sure I am not the first one on the board with "Factory Reproduction ZR1s"? If so.....cool.

Hey Greg, how's it going? I agree with your comments fully. I'd obviously love to get some Iforged 3-piece wheels or something of the sort, but funds of a college guy lead me to cheaper options. Wanting to go with something classy and sleek, I came to the ZR1s just as you said.

Your comment about the potential look of my car is very much appreciated, especially coming from a man such as yourself who is known to have one of the cleanest and best-looking cars in the F-body world.

In your opinion, would you go with the OEM-style ZR1s with the more rounded edges... or the newer AFS/OE Concepts rears-style with the flatter and sharper spokes? I think I prefer the newer style somewhat, but wanted to see what someone with your taste in appearance mods thought.

OEM:

New AFS-style:

In this picture, the older style looks to be on the front of the car and the newer style on the rear:

WOW, That is a tough call as they both look great. The OEM ones have a more "liquid" look to them that is a little bit of an older look while the AFS ones have more of a modern "chiseled" look to them. Kind of like the look the new Caddys have. Personally I would get the AFS wheels but only if the wheels are quality without a bunch of waves in the spokes like many cheap wheels have today. That would just kill the look of them IMO where the OEM ones have a smooth quality chrome job on them.

Agreed. I think I'm looking for that more chiseled look, which is why I think I'm going with AFS again, as I did for my black ZR1s. As of the pictures I've seen of them, the chrome looks to be top notch (I wouldn't expect anything less of AFS).

Here's some pics of AFS' work on the chrome wheels:

And here's the black chrome (which I'm not getting, but illustrates the quality well):

I prefer the flatter spokes that the AFS wheels have.
