Default drag radial question

I have some stock chrome 5-spokes which im pretty sure are 16x8's. Mods are vigilante 3200 and headers and other bolt-ons and tune. The gears are 3.23s. I can't hook up at all, best 60 foot is 2.1. Rather than buy wider wheels i was plannin to just put d.o.t. approved drag radials on a set of stock 5-stars. What is the widest/safest/best drag radial size to put on. Thanx.

what is the widest that will work well on a 16x8 wheel? They are 245/50/16 stock.

MT DR's the only 16" size is 255/50/16. They hook hard for me. They are super soft compound and will wear fast.

Goodyear has a 255/50-16 coming out with their SS drag radial, but I'm not sure if it's out yet or not.
