Default Best hooking tire for a DD?

Ok guys, I am looking to get some new wheels over the winter and am thinking about changing the way I approach my tire situation. I was planning on just getting some regular cheapo tires for daily driving and a seperate set of wheels and tires for the track.

But, I will be getting another car that will be my primary daily driver, so I would like to put some tires on the firebird that hook alot better than a street tire. I'm not sure a drag radial is right because they wear down quickly and are not too great in the rain, so I guess my question is whats the best hooking tire that I can get that still behaves decent in the rain (ie: not going to kill myself on them) and won't wear down to nothing in less than 10,000 miles.

How do they perform at the track ? How will they take the hit of a 4000 stall torque converter ?

Thats exagerating a tad, mine were $285 for 315/35/17's, they are $160 a piece for 245/50/16's.

My buddy went a 1.82 60' on 245/50-16s with a 3000stall at 28psi, drop those tires down to the magic 18psi and I'm sure they'll hold a 1.7x 60' with ease, good tires in dry and even one of the best for wet weather.

Are these going to be a better choice over a set of 315 nittos that are like 100 bucks less?

If you are talking about the regular 555's and not the 555R's then they will be ALOT better and worth the $$. Trust me I researched like crazy before I ordered mine as I spent almost $800 on tires, being in college thats a chunk of change. I didn't put 315 GS-D3's on my stock ZR1's, they are on some 17x11 Boyd Coddington Rebels.

i was thinking that nitto 555r's for the rear and just plain 555's for the front, it would keep the price down and you should get 18k- miles per set. Maybe a little less if you use them primarily for racing, but my buddies ls1 with all bolt ons runs really well on those tires. They hook really well and he has the m6, with a little burnout it might spin a few times off the line and chirps in second. Handles daily driving really well as well.

Only thing about DR's is anything over 55 in the rain gets scary, and thats pushing it. GS-D3's have great wet traction and great dry traction.

555Rs are drag radials. You'll get less mileage and way more grip vs the regular 555s. Not as much grip as the BFG, Hoosier, or Mickey Thompson drag radials, but the 555R lasts like 4-5x as long, 12-15k miles vs 3k.

i just switch from sumitomos (what a joke) to the 315 BF Goodwrench G-Force KD in the rear. They hook straight up, everytime. I've heard they have the best dry traction of any street tire.

The GY DS-3 will be better in the rain however.. though I haven't had any trouble with my BFGs in that area yet.
