Default powder coating chrome?

i have a set of TTII's on the way and i really want to get them powder coated black. i've already talked to a local shop and they say it is possible to powder coat chrome, but i'm wondering if it will be more practical to have them stripped first? does it really matter? will the black stick just as well to chrome as to the bare aluminum? please help guys! don't wanna waste money having to do this twice. thanks!

oh!... and if they DO need to be stripped first, anyone know a ball-park estimate on what i'd be looking at for that?

There are chrome TT2s but they are a special order and only the center is chrome. if you ordered TT2s and didn't ask for chrome then you are going to get the polished TT2s.

You'd be better off to sell the chrome wheels and start over. I seriously doubt anything is going to stick to chrome for long.

You can powder coat chrome, it will end up with a metallic look like on the 30th anniversary T/A blue wheels. Not sure it would look good with black though. You could have the wheels acid dipped and then powdercoated and it would look normal. I just went through this about 3 months ago and sold my almost perfect chrome zr1's to get a shitty set of grey zr1's off ebay and one ended up being cracked.

If you ordered chrome to do this than you screwed up.

You can powdercoat chrome all day long. The key is simple prep. Use the light scotchbright pad and run it over them. All the powder needs is a slight grip. You can actually powder over new chrome, but it has nothing to grip, and therefore may flake over time. It will not look transparent unless you shoot them with transparent powder. If you use a solid color, it will not show through. Very simple. If the wheels are already powdered, and you want to change colors, burn it off with a torch on a light setting. Then scotchbright them. Powdercoating results in a finish that is often mislead as to being a hard coating. It is actually softer than other coatings, allowing it to absorb impact, and thus giving it the durable characteristic. Light scratches will result in gloss powder, but can easily be filled with a coat of automotive paste wax.
