Default wheel widening: any one do it?

I have the stock WS6 rims and thinking of widening them for a 315. I have been checking the boards for a while but haven't seen anyone do it. People I've talked to that haven't done it say the rim probably won't be properly balanced. Has anyone done this? I don't want to fit them on the stock rims even though many say it's not a problem on clearance or traction and many say it is; mostly less tread contact, less traction. Don't know what to believe!!

These guys widen all kinds of wheels, http://www.stocktonwheel.com/wheel_widening.htm never had a set done my self, but have seen many Pro-street cars and hot rods with this compamies widened wheels.

Also as far as the 315 not having enuff contact patch on the 9 inch wide rim it's all bull, I have seen it done many times (3 so far) and they worked very well with better than average 60' foot times, just throw a set of those litle skinny 315's :p on there and see how they work for your self!

Start with an air pressure of 28 psi and work your way down till U get a very dark black contact patch from sidewall to sidewall.

I've done it. I had http://www.fixrim.com in Dallas widen some 18x8.5 wheels into 18x10 wheels. It took them 7 weeks to get them back to me, but they did an outstanding job. When I took my wheels/tires in to have them mounted/balanced the guy said they balanced out great. It was $200 a rim + $15 a rim shipping to have it done.

I wonder how much you can have a factory-like wheel widened?
if you widen it too much, the offset is thrown off too much to really "fit" into the wheel-well, right?
I wish i could widen my 18x9.5" vette wheels to 10.5-11" wide, but i would need spacers most likely

What about 17x9.5 replica chrome ZO6 rims widened to 17x11s? Would offset be screwed up? Zr1 17x11s for f-bodies fine but the rim was designed to be 17x11s.

Anyone know if the chrome ZO6 rims(17x9.5) will still fit if widened to 17x11? I want to run 315 nittos but I don't want to run them on 9.5s. I am curious ifthere will be rubbing if they are widened.

for every inch you widen you're wheels, add 25.4mm to your offset..

( assuming the wheel is widened from inside )

so a 17 x 9 + 15 wheel - widened by three inches...

becomes... 17 x 12 + 90mm

lol

... so what will my offset be for my 19x9.5 wheel (45mm offset) after it gets widened 3.00 inches ?? ...

WindWalker:

Not WS6 rims......but some real info for you.

I widened 18 x 10.5 rims to 18 x 12.5 so I can fit my 335 tires on them.
Widening rims: ONLY use a company that uses a donor inner wheel barrel. The shops that use the "hoop" that gets welded into your barrel after they cut it....are risking your life.
This is the company I used, their widened rims pass all Side-Load tests...... http://www.etmags.com Do yourself a favor and pay the $250.00 per rim to have it done right by this guy. They look factory when you get them back. High speed balanced......

The "hoop" garbage method DOES NOT pass the side load test.

315's on 17 x 9:
I drove around for 12+ years with 315's on my factory WS6 17 x 9's........PERFECT in every way.....wear, traction, looks fine, fits fine, doesn't rub after 3-4 hits with a hammer on the inner wheel well wall in one spot on each side.

People that say its bad....stop talking to them...they know nothing. They are just listening to the liability scared manufacturers.......315's are 100% safe on 17 x 9 rims.

Here's pictures of my widened rims (below). I had them stripped of their horrible OE Wheels chrome job and re-chromed by a top custom chrome shop in California. $160.00 per rim....great price.

I'm actually hoping to try to fit them tomorrow with just my 20mm spacer and the hammering of my inner wheel wells we did years ago to fit them when they were still 18 x 10.5 and 315 tires. I have offset LCAs also but I don't have time this week to install them and cut away some of the inner wheel well with a plasma cutter to get rid of the steel ridges that stick out about 1 inch toward the tire......
I'm just gonna see how much closer ONLY the 20mm spacers gets me. They are going to fit after I do the cutting and the LCAs.

.

I run 315 mickeys on my stock ws6 rims no problem and they fit fine didnt have to hit anything with a hammer or anything ive got a good inch of clearance all around. My tire guy actually talked me into the 315’s on my 9” wide rims. They hook good and ride and handle good. If you do widen your factory rims to 11” u mite need soacers because they will probly rub your bumpstops
