Default Question about widths on sumitomos and GSD3s

I bought some used 17x9.5 and 17x11 TT2s off a member on here a few months ago, which came with GSD3s on them, 285/40 and 315/35. However, there was a problem in shipping, and I only recieved 3 of them, even with the sellers help in trying to work everything out with the shipping company. Now I am getting ready to buy the 4th wheel, and 2 sumitomo rear tires (the lost wheel was one of the rears, and I dont have the money to put on 2 new GSD3s), and I was wondering, how close are the widths going to be between the goodyear 285s and the sumitomo 315s. I tried searching for just the widths on the 315s, and if someone could just tell me that, I would greatly appreciate it.

Ok, so you need to get new rear tires and need them cheap (ie Sumitomo's)

Here's the problem: The HRT Z II's come in a 285/35ZR18 made for a 9.5/10 inch wide rim. Manufacturers specs say the tires will fit up to a 11 inches wide wheel. I'd say if you had 10.5's then no problem, but you're talking quite a stretch between the 285 and the 315 on your 11 inchers, and I would advise against it.

If you need something cheap for DD'ing I suggest you stick with a stock setup until you can afford new 305/315's.

I suggest you light a fire under whoevers *** lost your damn wheel + tire. That sounds pretty ridiculous.

they arent even close to the same widths... the gsd3s are mammoth size the sumitomos are one of the thinnest.. I'd say a ~1.5 in diff.

He has 17's not 18's. The Sumo are a bid narrower than the GS-D3's and don't last or handle near the same. What happened with the shipping company? Did they ever fess up to losing your other wheel?

I know that the GSD3s will be much wider than the Sumitomos, but what I was wondering is how much width difference there will be between the 285 gsd3s on the front, and the sumitomo 315s (HTRZ) that I was planning on buying for the rear. The car is currently my DD, and the tires on the stock wheels have wires showing, and I was needing to get tires on it pretty quick, and I dont have the money to get the 315 gsd3s. Sorry if my earlier post was unclear, but what I was really needing to know is if the 315 htrz's will be wider than the 285 gsd3s, because I was wanting to retain the staggered look without spending $600+ on rear tires. If someone could tell me the width of the 315 sumis I would really appreciate it. Thanks again guys.

The shipping company just lost one of the rears, and sent me a small check for what they thought the wheel and tire was worth ($125). So now, I have to replace it pretty much out of pocket, and I have to do it on a bit of a budget.

Chances are, they sent you $125 because that's the value that was put on them when they were shipped..

Sometimes people shipping stuff will under estimate the value of the item to keep the shipping charges down.. Cheaper stuff ships for a cheaper value..

You are lucky you got a check at all, it sounds like.. BUmmer man..

^ I really am lucky that I got that much for it. The seller was a great help in talking to them, and now I know to put as much shipping insurance as I can on anything that I have to send.

Thanks SS1156. Do you know how wide the contact patch would be on the 315?

Roughly speaking, the 285 and 315 designates the section width of the tires, in millimeters. This somewhat corresponds to the actual width of the tire, but there are variations between all manufacturers. A 285 tire is going to be roughly 285mm/25.4mm/inch wide = 11.2" wide. a 315 tire is going to be roughly 12.4" wide. You'll see around +/- half an inch variation from model to model though.

You're also going to want to be VERY careful driving around with GS-D3s on the front and Sumitomos on the rear. The Goodyears have MUCH better traction than the Sumis and that's going to make your car very sensitive to oversteer, something that already tends to be pretty easy with our cars under power.

Thanks jRaskell, I dont know why I didnt do that conversion earlier... And I figured that it will be quite prone to oversteer, just hoping that it won't be too horrible.

Ahve you bothered to do ANY research yourself, say on Tirerack.com, where tire specs are readily available?

Yes I have, and I have yet to find the info that I am needing. I have checked everywhere that I know to check, and then posted the question in regards to the Sumitomo 315.

You may want to recheck your tire availability status. Tire Rack Dropped the 315-mm Sumitomo HTR35Z from what I have seen and only carry a few select sizes, mainly for rice burners and introduced the HTRIII tire which is geared for Imports also.
The widest I can get make the contact patch on mine was about 10.5 inches that actually hit the ground at 26-28 psi, any less pressure and you loose the center tread contact. They are made more for autoX than straight line driving, outer tread blocks are a bit rounded for harder turns. But for the money, you wouldn't find anything in that size.
