Wider tires for cornering?

It is time to buy tires for the 99 Camaro SS.

I think the stock tire size is 275/40 17.

Anyway, is there any advantage in handling if you put a wider tire on the stock wheel?

I'm looking for maximum cornering.

The car has some suspention upgrades (HD shocks, 35/21 sways, poly/rod PHB, LCA, STB) but is stock ride height (factory SS springs) with stock wheels.
