Wow, come on now guys.
The 295 in the picture is actually narrower than the 285. Reason? Nitto's run narrower than almost ALL other tire companies. A 315 Nitto compared to a 315 BFG or Goodyear will look like a 275 compared to a 315. This is why lots of people get away with running 315/35R17 Nitto DR's on stock 9 inch rims. It is by no means recommended but since Nitto is actually a narrower tire, it works.
Nitto DR 315/35R17 - 12.13 in width
Goodyear GSD3 same size - 12.3 in width
0.17 inches may not seem like much but get that mounted on a rim and the Goodyear will look like a steamroller compared to the Nitto.
Aspect ratio of the sidewall will in NO WAY effect the width of the tire, its an optical illusion.
A 295 on the recommended wheel size will be wider than the 285 on its recommended wheel size any day of the week and twice on sundays.
The pictures the OP posted, are basically comparing oranges and apples. Get those sizes in the same brand of tire and you will clearly see the 295 is wider.

But basically for all tense and purposes, you're dead wrong in all your assumtions. Sidewall has basically nothing to do with width until you get into drag tires and low pressures. A 275 is a 275, is a 275. Your neighbor must have stayed at a Holiday Inn Express.

No it doesn't. That is the measurement for the sidewall. The ONLY measurement for overall width is the first number.
To answer the original question, the 285s are wider because they aren't Nittos. Nittos run noticeably smaller than any other tires of the same size.

Come on guys......Go to the Tire rack, Summit racing, etc...and pull up the
specifications for each tire. The specs will tell you which tire is wider, taller or whatever.... You can search by brands also.
