275 or 285 for better traction
so i know that you can have a tire that is too wide which would cause less traction, but it is time for me to get new tires and i am wondering will 275/40/17s or 284/40/17s BFG KDW hook better?? im almost tempted to step up to a 275 KD but they run around 250 a piece!!!
thanks guys

285 isnt any taller!! the second number is the height of the tire! Any the is approx. about an inch difference, so I would say that it would hook better, but if your looking at a $250 tire, im sure that they are made to perform alot better, bc of their different tire compound

From my understanding technically a 285 would be slightly taller, unless your a tire buff not enough to notice by the naked eye, the second number is actually a percentace of the first number so it'd be 40% of 275 vs 40% of 285....
anyways thats not the point, I completely agree that look more at compound than size, just go with the 285 and see if you like it better then next time you will know for sure, theres no replacement for experience.

Wow that is just bad information. Completely wrong. The second number is the aspect ratio, like he said a percentage of the section height so a 285 tire on the same rim would be 8mm taller=0.3 inches. And the 10mm width difference is 0.394 inches, not approximatly an inch. Please learn before you spread wrong information.

Your ruler must like to lie. A 285-40-17 will be taller than a 275-40-17, but not by much. The 40 is a percentage of the width which equals how big your siedewall is.

The only way to tell the difference on something that close is to measure the roll out (circumference) of the tires, you wouldn't be able to tell that much of a difference by measuring the diameter with a ruler. I have crewed on some pretty high dollar, high competition teams and we would measure the tires with a flexible tape (like what they use to measure you for a suit). Had to make sure the tires were the exact same diameter before mounting other wise the car would not go down the track straight.

Dude, you are wrong. You will not see a difference by just looking at them.
Figure this, a 285mm width with a 40 aspect ratio. 285x.40 = 114mm sidewall.
Then a 275/40... 275x.40 = 110mm sidewall height. So unless you have super vision you will not be able to see the difference.
Just face it, YOU ARE WRONG!
