Default How to hook?

Well I figured I would give this a shot. My car is almost stock. I have a lid, LS6 intake and cat back exhaust with a tune. The big thing is the VIG 3600 converter. I need some cheap tires that will hook decent. Should I get nittos 555 drag radials or just some really sticky summer tires? The car is 95% street car and I don’t want to pay more that $150 a tire.

ALSO:- I live down 1/4 mile of dirt road so I need a tire that can live up to that. I don’t want to be dealing with tons of flats and paint chipping off the quarter panels because of the rocks getting thrown up. Please give me some advice.

Well your obvious answer to a tire that hooks is drag radials....BFG's, Nittos, MT's.....Nitto 555'r can be found for around $160 or so a piece on ebay!

But when you said you drive down a 1/4 mile dirt road I got confused and have no idea how drag radials would hold up to that! Good luck!

That is what worries me. I have seen people post what hooks but I don’t know how bad it will be living down a dirt road. I have heard horror stories of the rocks pushing through the soft tires and causing flats and also huge dents from rocks all over the quarter panels due to large rocks being flung up. Any advice?

put the tires on at the track, then take them off when you leave.cost a little more to buy rims and tires but that solves all your track problems,a lot off people at the track will let you use a jack and lug wrench,if you want to ride on them all the time just be carful on the dirt road.

I think you'll be ok going down a dirt road with some Nittos.

I want to drive on them every day is what I am asking. The car ONLY comes out in nice weather and put away for winter and all that so I need something to hook on the street as well. Will I be further ahead to get a DR or a sticky summer street tire?

I know I will be ok on dirt as far as not crashing, lol. What I am asking is will they be getting holes like crazy and putting dings in the quarter? We got large type gravel down the road with pea gravel mix when just put down.

555R's, or 555 R2's if you ever plan on doing any auto-x or track days.

Well as long as you don't do a burnout right before you go down this dirt road I can't see it flinging up too many rocks.

Nitto 555R DR's would be your best bet as far as price and mileage you'll get out of them(15-20k compared to 6-8k with BFG's or MT's) and as far as the dirt road, you'll hear rocks being "picked up" with any drag radial but as long as you havent done a big burnout right b4 driving on the dirt road it shouldn't do any damage to the tires or more importantly the body. My cousin lives on a dirt road and i rode up and down his road once a week on dr's and it wasnt any worse than driving on a normal road with a little debris on it

any drag radial driven on the street is going to get some nicks and cuts.. Ive driven the nittos and bfgs and they both did with the bfgs being worse. A dirt road isnt going to affect them though, so base it more on how many miles you drive and which tire life is more exceptable to your needs. Normal driving, i got 12k out of nittos and probably shouldnt have driven in the rain for the last 2k, and i also ran them at 25psi sometime even lower to keep the middles from wearing out.
I got 6k from bfgs although these were on an 18 inch wheel and for your 17s the tread pattern is the older looking like a comp TA, however the compound is the same.

I love my nittos but they pick up every lil rock on the road but even in snow they perform awesome for a dr.

Thanks for the replies guy's. Guess the nitto's are going to have to work because I need the hook with the stall! I’m getting the 245-50-16 so hopefully it will give me good hook for my Bolton car and not break the rear.

Yeah, I know you won't crash driving with a DR on a dirt road, it was directed toward your worries about a rock poking into a soft tire or tossing rocks into your fenders.
