Default painting a spare set of wheels

I have a pair of silver wheels I want to paint black. what grit of sandpaper should i use to scuff the surface and between coats. I plan on doing a gloss black and then a clear coat to protect it.

i just sanded my 10 spoke silver wheels, i used 80 to sand down all the dings and cracks and then i used 400 then finished it off with 800... im sure if your wheels are in good shape you can just sand them down with 400 and be done with it!... i used black primer for now then im going to use glossy black then use clear!! should come out pretty nice!...

Hmm, could you just sandblast them and achieve the same goal?

yeah you could sandblast them but some wheels will pit. i actually used chemical stripper and a 3m particle wheel to get mine down as far as i could. i put a 1k primer down from standox. then i sanded with 220 and then 400 then primed the wheels with a standox 2k primer. wetsanded the primer with 400 then 600 then 800 then if any bare metal showed a put a little more 1k on before painting and then painted them. the only problem with painting wheels with basecoat clearcoat is that is easier to chip off as where powdercoating would be much more durable.

Say the wheels in question are the SS 10 spokes with peeling chrome. Or should I not risk it and just strip/sand them?

wow that orange peeled like crazy, what kind of paint are you using? did you get a wax/ grease remover 1st or at least wash them w/ palmolive 1st.

i always just used air craft stripper and a wire brush on really bad wheels but for a color change just scuff like mentioned above.

its still wet when I took a picture of it. these are wheels just used for drag racing so it doesn't really bother me. i had a grease/wax remover cloth then used used duplicolor primer, black, then clear. All ot it was in rattle cans from auto zone.

I have a spray gun, so real paint is cheap and easy enough for me. Just smooth them with 220, primer/filler, 400 grit, spray. I did my 2 back ones for the DR's, and my paint is better than the OEM stuff. I used acylic enamel....way cheaper than clear coating...
