Default Nitto 555R -vs- Nitto 555R2

All, I finally made the jump to a set of Nitto 555R tires for the rear of my Formula. When I got there, they (Big O) were putting a Nitto 555RII (2) on them. I asked the difference, and they said the "2" was just an upgrade.

I then went to the Nitto website, and it shows the R2 being a stiffer sidewall, but the same tread compound. But it is hard for me to believe the R2's are going to have the same stick (straight line acceleration) as the regular R's do.

Can anyone shed any knowledgeable insight on this? Are they pretty much the same - or should I just go back and say "Try Again!"

I thought the R2 was a road race tire??
If that's correct, I would go back and tell them to change them.

They are the road race tire. Exact same compound and tread pattern as the drag radial, but with a stiffer sidewall. I have a set on the back of my '69 SS. For the street, they probably work the same, but at the track I'd guess that drag radials would work better.

Nine ball is right. Stiffer sidewalls so they don't flex as much in cornering. For the track I would think drags are better since they allow more flex. (they are designed for that. All depends on power applied to make more difference.
With ur power 426rwhp I'll get them changed!!

I've left the 555R2's on. They do hook pretty well on the street, other than the top end of First. But at least the car doesn't try to spin itself around at the top end of Second at 55-60 mph. That was fun and all, but seemed pretty dangerous!

So far so good - I offered to keep them so I could be the guinea pig.

After owning both types, I found the RII's stick just as well as the regular R's.
