You don't need to relocate the HVAC controls to install a double DIN head unit like the Pioneer AVIC series - all you need is a customized trim bezel. Kee Audio (a sponsor here) has a limited quantity of Firbird double DIN bezels he's selling in this thread.
There have been lots of threads about it - do a search on "double DIN" to find pictures, installation information, even comparisons of different head unit models.
Here is what my Kenwood double DIN looks like:
BTW, the Z2 is only a software upgrade from a Z1. They didn't make any real changes until the Z3. If you can find a Z1 cheaper, you can make it into a Z2 with a free software update.

I wrote a comparison of the two in this thread. I liked them both but chose the Kenwood because of its better Sirius support and the Garmin-based GPS. Otherwise, I would have stayed with the Pioneer because it has some really nice features.
