Default What kind of amp for a 10"?

I am looking to put one 10" sub in my trunk. I don't know much about stereos , so I was wondering what size amp I would need? Aside from wiring obviously, and the box, do I need anything else to power a single 10" sub safely?

I need to know mostly what type of sub I need to a can shop around before I start my project. Thanks guys

you will need an amp to match the rms wattage of the sub.

in addition to the amp, you will need power wire, ground wire, an inline fuse/holder, speaker wire, remote turn on wire, and RCA cable and a line-out-converter (unless the amp has one built in). the last part of course assumes that you are running the stock head unit still. if you have an aftermarket head unit then you dont need the LOC.

you need to buy the amp and sub as a set. not necessarily from the same place, but they need to be picked together, so that the amp has enough power for the sub at the proper ohm load of the sub.

do you have any subs in mind? what kinda music do you listen to and what box are you getting? i assume the stealth box if its a single 10.

The way to do it is look at your RMS and max power ratings of your sub. Now try and find an amp that produces 70-90% of those numbers and you'll be very happy.

Do you have a sub or amp picked out?

Yeah, I'm wanting to get the stealth box in the empty part of the trunk area. How many watts should it be? I know I won't need a huge one or anything, I just didn't want to underpower it.

I was looking at Alpines or Boston Acoustics. I'm not buying until the summer, but I want to make sure I do it right the first time.

Thanks for all the advice guys!

I used to have an Alpine Type-R, loved it. I sold it to lose some weight out of the car and I really regret it now. Had a Rockford Fosgate P500.2 amp on it, matched the RMS and Max ratings almost perfectly.

Me too, I really wish I hadn't have sold that damn setup now. It sounded awesome. I would fully recommend it to anyone. You could barely hear it outside of the car when I had the windows up, which I really liked, and it delivered nice, tight bass. Didn't shake your teeth out or anything, but I didn't want that.

Make sure whatever sub you pick matches the cubic air space as the box. otherwise it won't perform like its suppose to.

If you're wanting to use a stealth enclosure...look for a low air space requirement sub, like an Alpine Type S, Kicker Comp, Rockford Fosgate P1 or P2, etc.; those stealth enclosures on average have anywhere from .5 to .8 cubic feet, sealed.

All-in-all, it depends on the overall "sound" you're wanting to achieve from your stereo system. The types of music you listen to, how you like to "listen" to your music and all sorts of other things...even the budget you're working with.

ive got a stealth box and wondering what subs the best for one...id like to have bass that you can feel and vibrate your hair when turned up...it dounds good now but my speaker needs more room to breathe...i was looking at the shallow subs for trucks seem like they need very little air space...will mine get louder putting a hole in the box? if not i wanna swap subs what kinda sub works good in the small air space and will hit the low tones...around 400 watt rms or more
