As an owner of an Escort X50, let me just say this. Make sure you unplug your detector before you turn your car on. There's been many cases of units just quitting after starting up a car with the unit plugged in. That's the way mine went, it just up and stopped turning on

Did you use a hardwire kit? If so, the fuse didn't stop the surge? If not, there's a fuse in the plug that goes into the cig. lighter, it didn't catch the surge either? I've now got 2 8500's and both are hardwired so they come on when I start the car...
