it cannot be removed, as it's integrated into the BCM. The owners manual has the instructions for disabling it, but I forget them off the top of my head. I disabled mine 8 years ago when I installed an aftermarket one.

your VATS in the new key/column probably doesn't match what your old one was.

That's what I'm thinking. The column is from a 97 but the place said it'll work but don't think so

The column will work fine. The problem is that you're using a different ignition cylinder which requires a different key which doesn't match the resistor from the original key. The VATS system won't allow the car to start because the resistor isn't correct.

In this case it's easy to fix. Measure the resistance of your original key and then go get a key blank with the same resistance and use it to make a copy of the new key. That way you have a key with the correct cuts AND the right resistor.

With a digital multimeter. Set it to Ohms and touch the probes to opposite sides of the key on the metal contacts in the black pellet.

Nope. You can bypass the VATS system, try each of the 15 different resistor values until you find the matching one, get the BCM from the same car that you got the steering column from, or buy a new BCM.

So I can bypass it or get the bcm which isn't a option. So how do I bypass it. Sounds like a easier solution. Thanks again

Do a search on "VATS bypass".

After you bypass the VATS system, you can disable the alarm using the instructions in this post.

Perfect I appreciate it. Just one question about that. Do I got to put the key in the on and off postion sequence and then do it or just open the door then push the lock?

As the instructions say, turn the ignition on and then off, then remove the RADIO fuse, then turn the key to the accessory position. Wait for the two chimes and then procede to the instructions under "theft deterrent arming method".

Hey just wanted to add, you may indeed have an alarm. There was a GM accessories security system offered as a dealer installed item, it used the factory key fob and was usually located under the radio. IIRC the GM accessories piece is made by DEI. The factory theft deterrent system is tied to the BCM and cant be removed, but can be shut off.
