WhiteBird00: So does that mean if I replace the entire steering column I am going to have electrical issues?

No, it means you need to run the wires to the back of the fusebox for the two fuses he mentioned rather than the ones I mentioned.

Also, 1A = 1 amp.

That's a real PITA. Or, you should just wire it up like a '98 to the existing circuits.

Actually, for the tiny amount of current they draw, it might be just as convenient to wire them to the radio harness. You can connect to power on the yellow wire (pin 9 in the black connector) and connect to the dash light dimmer using the gray wire (pin 7 in the same black connector). Or, if you prefer the switches to stay brightly lit regardless of how dim you set the dash, you can use the brown wire (pin 6) for illumination.

This is a great idea as well.

What are you talking about? Wire it up like a "98 to the existing circuits"?? According to him he has no wires to plug into. The only existing circuits should be the ones in the IP fusebox, as posted... And according to the manuals, it doesn't piggyback off of the other wires like what WhiteBird just suggested. They have their own fuses in the IP fusebox just like on any other year. If you hook straight 12v power to them, then you don't have a dimmer signal and the lights in the buttons always stay lit which will burn the incandescent bulbs out in no time.

OK so I am to use Pin 7 & 9 to hook this up. And then there is no problem if I use the steering column fron the 2000 in my 1998, the wires are the same. Is this correct? I am a litle confused again. and by the way Thank You all for your Help with this project. When I get this complete maybe we can post this for others to use?

I meant wire it up to the existing circuit breakers provided in '98 vs. wire up a special 1A breaker.

Did anyone confirm if the '98 radio will work with the controls once this is all wired up? ie: was the '98 radio the same as the later models that were optioned with the steering wheel controls?

Orange cable? Can you get a picture? I only thought there were 2. A black one for the radio controls and a yellow one for the airbag.

Yes Orange it has 2 thin wires inside. I was doing more reading and I believe that it is from the ignition switch. My thoughts now are to change the complete column, if I can get a replacement lock cylinder and key made the same as I have now. I can then switch the lock out on the bench before the install. I drive this car to work every day and cannot afford to have it down because of the computer not recognizing the pellet in the key.

It is going along fine thank You for asking. I have the steering column which I believe I will switch out as long as the wires are the same. I need to remove the panels under the dash to check wiring. I am currently awaiting the release from Sony of CDX GT700HD radio with built in HD. I am going to do the entire job at one time. I'm thinking of getting a radio mounting kit from HUMount. I haven't decided to get one with the lights or not? When I am done I will post some pictures. I just want to thank everyone who helped me with this.

I was looking to do this as well. If you have some time make a simple write up on everything and post pics to help us out!

Well I'm done, what a Pain in my ***!!! I was going to do a complete steering column switah but that did not work out. I pulled my steering column gently just in case. I installed the new column and could not get the end to hook up with knuckle under the hood. Go figure it was 2" too short, the doner car must have been in an accident so I took it out. I followed the Instructions supplied by ZexGx https://ls1tech.com/forums/stereo-el...-controls.html

I removed the steering wheel and put it on my original column and put it back into my car. What I did do was to go to the local junk yard and cut the wireing harness with the radio controls from a 1997 Firebird. I then removed the necessary color wires soldered them togother so i would have a good length of wires to run to my radio,

I then installed my New Sony CDX-GT700HD radio along with my new adapter plate I bought from HUMOUNT connected all of the wires and soldered them all. Everything is in and working Fine. The only thing I need to do now is to install the PAC SWI-PS adapter so I can use the controls on the steering wheel but that is for another day. I have had ENOUGH for today!!

I just want to say THANK YOU to ALL that helped me with this project and that is EVERYONE that has responded to this thread.
