Question Steering Wheel upgrade

Hi I could use some Help I've been looking but cannot find any information. I have a 1998 Camaro z28 and my steering wheel is in pretty bed shape. I have a steering wheel and air bag from a 2000 Camaro z28 with radio controls. Can I replace my old steering wheel with no controls with this one and have the radio controls work? Has anyone done this? Is it very involved? I purchased the wheel and complete steering column from a 2000 z28. Any help wouild be Great. Thanj You.

I'm not sure about the steering wheel interchange or if your HU can work with the controls, but here's a good thread on how to install them: https://ls1tech.com/forums/stereo-el...-controls.html

You may find more information in the Stereo and Electronics FAQ's (lots of information there)

On the 2000, what are you looking at? The control wires or the SIR module wires? The steering controls plug in to the SIR module. Then the SIR module has four wires going from it down the column. The SIR module wires should are dark blue, black, gray w/black stripe, and yellow in my 1999.

The steering wheel control wires are the same colors for all 98-02 f-bodies. The circuits are a little different in later models because they added separate fuses for the control function and illumination but that doesn't affect anything in the steering column.

The wires are:
Yellow - power supply for switches
Dark Blue - output from switches to radio
Grey/Black - power supply to switch illumination
Black - ground for switch illumination

WhiteBird00: I have an entire Column I purchased the guy told me that it was from a 2000 camaro, the wires from the radio control (gray wire not the yellow) are yellow, Gray, Black w/white and light Green. My service manual showes the color you posted. Maybe this column is from a different year??? According to the schematic in my book the dark blue goes to the radio in slot #14 in the white pin connector, but i don't have a dark Blue wire. Any ideas on the colors? Also do you know where the other wires go? Thank You for your reply.

Your 2000 Camaro steering column may not have included steering wheel audio controls - they were unavailable 93-99 and optional 00-02. Are you sure the wires you found are for steering wheel controls?

You would not have the dark blue wire in your radio connector because steering wheel controls weren't installed in 98 Camaros. You'll have to run your own wire from the column to the radio.

OK here is a picture of the wires coming off of the steering column. I have read that the Yelloy cable is for the air bag and the Gray is for the radio. Is this correct? The gray cable has 4 wires as can be seen in the picture they are yellow, gray, light green and black. Now the Big Question is where do they connect. and I do not have a connection hanging under my dash for the radio. My car ia a 1998 and did not have the option for radio controls this is my problem. Thank You.

From a '99 Factory Service Manual:

Green goes to the dark blue wire on Pin 14 of the radio harness C3.
Gray wire is Hot with Lamps ON and goes to STG WHL CTRL Fuse 13 (1A)
Yellow is Hot in ACCY,RUN And During Retained Accessory Power and it goes to STG WHL CTRL Fuse 3 (1A)
Black is a ground.

Now whether or not the 98 Camaro headunit is compatible with the steering wheel controls is another issue. According to this manual, Pin 14 (dk blu) is Pontiac. Pin 16 (DK GRN/WHT) is the VSS wire for Chevrolet.

The fuse[s] should be located in the passenger compartment fuse box.

Sorry for the rotation:

my slot 3 and 13 are empty on the fuse box. Do i need to add fuses or just tie in to the proper fuse in the box. Also what do you mean by (1A)? Thank You again.

98 models didn't have the two separate STG WHL CNTL fuses (one for switch function, the other for switch illumination). The switches in 98 were wired to the RADIO fuse and the illumination to the dash lights (TAIL LPS fuse).
