Kenwood HU, picked up at Autozone when I worked there, decent and lights up red.

with humount

lit up, doesn't look like much during daytime but looks pretty good with other interior lights on a TA

Pretty decent HU for me. I don't own an iPod or any MP3 players, so the fact that I can make a data CD full of songs is good by me. Sounds pretty good and matches, so I'm happy. Also, the HUmount is great! Love it and was really easy install.

This thread really impresses. The installs are obviously aftermarket but still look clean. I was browsing an online store for receivers and they note that many if not all of the receivers will stick out about a 1/2" or so; is this the case with you guys, because I just don't see it. Also, what did you guys do about steering wheel controls, if you have them?

I just went without, never really use them anyway. But most headunits can be wired for the controls, just have to buy a seperate harness.

You mean that PAC-SWIX thing, or whatever that adapter is called?

I used the PAC-SWI-JACK for my Alpine and it works very well. On the back of some radios, there is a plug marked "remote". the SWI-JACK just plugs in there. I know I for one can't live without my steering wheel controls because on the Alpine, there is no "direct" way to access the radio presets (a dumb design decision on Alpine's part IMHO).

For example, suppose I am on preset 1 and want to go to preset 6. If I didn't have my steering wheel controls, I would have to take my eyes off the road (just for a second, but still don't like it), push the preset button on the Alpine, turn the wheel to scroll down to preset 6, and push enter. With my steering wheel, I just push "preset" and it cycles through them. Makes scanning through presets quick and easy.

Also, the Alpine does not have a "mute" function except through the wired or IR remotes. So I have to use the SWI-JACK with my steering wheel controls to get to the mute function on the HU. Again, shame on Alpine for not putting that feature on the front panel.

Here's my test fit pics I just took a few mins ago. It's a 1.5 DIN Alpine CDA-D853. It took me a LONG time combing classified adds and eBay to finally find one in mint condition. It also has a 12 disc changer...but if I dump the changer, there's an iPod adapter that's supposed to work too.

It's got a very nice colorful bouncing EQ on the face as well, but since this was a test fit, I didn't have it on...

Yeah. Sometimes I miss my CD changer as well. Particularly when someone wants me to listen to a CD or when I don't want to or don't have time to go through the trouble of ripping a CD to my iPod. I have toyed with the idea of getting a cheep Sony Walkman type CD player and hooking up my aux-in to the walkman's headphone jack. A cheep solution and probably not the best sound quality, but it would work in a pinch.

I also don't care for the lack of a good EQ/sound processing feature in the unit. It only has a 2-band parametric EQ. It works, but again it's certainly not ideal. You have to get the PXA-H100 Imprint sound processor to enable those features which costs $$$.

FYI, Alpine also makes a 6-disk CD changer that can run from the Ai-Net bus on the IDA-XXX series units.
