A relay being an electrical switch has contacts inside.
They do wear from use a 30 amp relay is pretty stout & is a good recommendation for a fuel pump upgrade.
A inadequate relay could cause a voltage drop to pump or fail completely.

Idea being, you should run some brand new fat-***
wire to feed the new hungry fuel pump, and use the
relay to switch it, with the old fuel pump feed used
to energize the relay coil. Don't neglect the ground
return either. You're looking to remove one limit to
fuel system flow*pressure performance (the electrical).

Basically, a relay is a device to allow you to switch a high power circuit using a low power controlling circuit. For example, you have a fog light relay so that the fog light switch can be run with a small amount of current to switch on and off the higher power needs of the lights.
