Default Foolish HU Question

The factory Monsoon HU is only 5'' or so deep, and is supported by a plastic bracket in the rear. Most aftermarket stereos are more than 5" deep, and would appear to hit (or interfear) with that rear support backet.

In order to make an aftermarket head unit fit, do you have to cut the factory support bracket in the rear?

Yep. Takes about 3 minutes with a dremel.

Thanks for the reply.

Once the bracket is cut, is it possible to reinstall the factory HU?
(in the event you want to sell the car, and keep the aftermarket HU).

Yeah, that little piece in the back doesn't really serve a whole lot of purpose so just cut it off, and if you go back to stock you won't have any issues.

After I began sawing the bracket, I found out it's easy to just bend the metal backing back and just cut the plastic part off. You'll see what I'm talking about once you get in there.

I bent mine then was able to remove the bolt holding it in place. Allowed more room for wiring harness and such.

if you go with a 1din head unit you can get dash kits that dont center the head unit and instead have it sit near the top so the rear of the head unit rests on top of the bracket. Below the head unit is usually some pocket area to stash whatever.

That's what i did. The bracket actually supports the head unit a bit.

Just chop that dang thing off! That's what I did. I did it both on my 1996 V6 bird as well as on my Formula. I put the stock HU back in the 1996 right before I sold it and didn't have any issues with the rear support bracket being gone. Granted it is a PITA to saw it off. I think I just used a hacksaw to do it, but can't remember off the top of my head.

My Alpine sits on top of the the tab & metal bracket.
I bent the bracket to hold down the tab and it supports the bottom of the stereo.

I wouldn't go though the trouble of cutting it off without checking to see it is necessary.
