CDT CL-6s in a Trans Am?
I picked up the CDT CL-6 midbass speakers for my Camaro a little while back. Now that that car is totaled, I thought about putting them in my new Trans Am. It lists those speakers in the premium package on Kee's site. However, they are single voice coil speakers and the TA uses dual voice coils.
I can't find any mention on Kee's site, and no amount of searching here has come up with an answer to the question of whether or not anything special needs to be done since they are SVC or if I should just store them and buy the Bazooka DVC he sells.
Since they are listed in his premium package for Camaro AND Firebirds, I assume they can be used, but then again, the few posts of his here I saw he was always promoting the DVC speakers for Firebirds. So, what's the answer with these CL-6s? Install them or not? Standard 2 wire installation or something else?
You can use the CL-6 in a Firebird application of the Monsoon by just using 1 pair of the 2 pairs of wires. Just cap the other pair off. This will result in a slight loss of overall output by about -2db.
Give that a shot and see what you think. It does work, it's just not optimal with the stock system compared to the Bazookas even though the CL-6 is a nicer speaker.
Those CDTs sure sounded awesome in the Camaro though. I was seriously impressed after removing the Kenwood coax from the sails, undoing the wiring mess and getting straight bass from them like factory again. Awesome speakers, the CL-6s.
It does kinda bug me that they are single voice coils and you are just capping off the other 2 wires, but its better than having to buy new ones. It works, sounds pretty good. Not as good as it would sound with the DVC speakers, but I am not loosing any sleep over it.
I am getting a bit of hiss from them though. You can hear it especially when you turn the volume to 0. Not sure if it's the wiring or something else, but it wasn't present with the Pioneer coax speakers before I pulled them.

As for the hiss, the Monsoon HU is quite noisy. With good speakers you will be able to hear it more. The CDT's have a much higher sensitivity level so they are more prone to pick up things you wouldn't normally hear.
You should just put the CL-6 midbass in the doors. It's a tight fit though and you would have to cut the back of the mount a little for depth but it will go in.
If you did that then you would just need some tweeters for the doors and I can get some nice ones fairly inexpensively.
If your wary about cutting those mounts just grab some from the junk yard, they are cheap and plentiful.

The wiring for the speakers was not hacked up at least. The previous owner cut the leads off the factory speakers leaving the plugs intact and just wired them to the replacement speakers with the cut ends. They did do a crap job on that end by just taking the stripped ends and sticking it through the holes on the pins and wrapping it around a few times.
The front speakers in the totaled Camaro were still factory stock, and the hatch were Pioneer 4 inch speakers. In the TA now, the hatch speakers are factory components, and the door speakers, are well a mix of Pioneer and something else on the other door. The tweeters are stock though. One of the previous owners was pretty cheap in having 4 completely different model speakers in the doors and sails.
