Well got some driving around dallas tonight with some more time under the belt, i saw about 5 or 6 cops, most of them already had people pulled over (don't think they leave their radars running) so those never went off. It went off mid signal and stayed on once and then ten seconds or so 2 cops came flying back from behind me, couldn't tell, but it seemed like they might have been fairly close when it picked them up :/. The other cops it seemed to pick up really well ahead of time, ect. Still need more time with it but it seems to be doing the job fairly well. I came across a speed trap and never occured to me that this could be a good way to mess around and try various things testing the radar vs the speed check. Things like response time, detection time, reaction time, ect. Has anyone else done this before and are these units more or less the same thing as a LEO's radar? I can't believe the different feeling while having a radar, makes you wonder how you ever got away with speeding with out one.

i bought a V1 and it has saved me literally probably 15 times no joke. ya a cheap on may be good to get you by for now but if you spend 100-200 on one then it screws you and you get a ticket for 100-200...you could of just bought a v1...wait it out and get the v1 i was following my wife through some hills on my crotchrocket and she was running the v1. told her to tap the brakes twice if it was in front and just normal brakes if from the back. the "L" went off and she didnt know what it was...kept hitting for almost 5 miles..couldnt figure out what she was doing speeding up slowing down etc then crested the hill and BAM state trooper. how in the hell she picked up laser without ever seeing the cop..i have no idea i thought it was line of sight. Another one...straight flat plains of ks...started goin off backed off to 65 and 7 miles later I met him...ya...7 miles later...do the math...both going 65-70 we were around 14 miles or so out from each other and i was picking him up. no idea how but i did. I use it every time I go to work and I pick up the cops before i even see them and i know where they are hiding bc of the arrows...or if they are running a speed trap..showing 2 then arrows up and down or how ever they are set up. i run mine just BARELY under the factory sun strip and make sure its level and straight and its perfect.
granted that 7 miles..he could of been on the side of the road then pulled out before i met him also but ive never seen a cop sit on that road and there was no other cars out but me and him...so who knows...all I know is it was 7 miles till I saw him.

^ pretty crazy, I wanted a v1 but yeah ain't happening. The reviews say the bel has the same detection range just less features. Guess the only way to know would be to run em side by side. I know people swear by the v1 but IMO it's like koni shocks, may be the best of the best but not for everyone due to the price, unfortunatly. Have you had previous detectors 243 to compare it to?

Based on research done 4-5 years ago, the V1 and Escort 8500 had the same range and reliability. The differences were, the V1 had the arrows toward the incoming signal, the Escort did not. The V1 picked up more interference and went off more often for false signals where as the Escort had less false readings.
Both detectors picked up the real signals from similar distances. I have no clue about the new stuff such as the 9500 and new Valentines.

ya i bought a cheap one at walmart once and ya it worked...but i usually saw the cop by then lol ya the range may be the same compared to others and I know some people say the only real difference is the directional arrows and they wouldnt pay more for that etc etc.....you also gotta think...ok if theres a speed trap...theres more than 1 cop...your radar is only gonna beap...THATS IT. so once you pass that one cop and its still beeping...are you picking up the one you just passed or is there another one down the road? How do you know? if they sit close enough together the strenght will still be high. Thats why I like the V1 bc it will tell you "2" or "4" or how many its picking up and once you pass that one cop and it still says "2" itll show an arrow up and down..so obviously you have one behind you and theres STILL one ahead of you. otherwise you just have to keep doing the speed limit until the beeping stops on other radar detectors then speed so you know there isnt another cop waiting around the corner. And ya i understand its expensive and all i was just defending it against other people on here. lol

I have a cobra I got from a friend for $5
it's hardwired right above the mirror so it's always on and I have yet to have someone notice it before it goes off, and as crappy as it may be I have never gotten a ticket

Running a V1 hardwired in with a blend mount. This thing has literally picked up troopers with several cars in between us heading in the same direction about 1.5mi apart for 4-5mi before I even see them.
Its rigged a little in this picture (testing out the hard wire/reception) I was waiting on a new windshield mount from V1 to use with the blend mount since it didn't come with one (ebay purchase).

I am a radar detector nut, I enjoy technology and have done more research (no, not just internet) that most people here have done on the LSx's.
A cobra will work ok, ONLY if an officer is lazy. CASE CLOSED.
Comparing a Cobra to new, high end Escort, Bel, or V1 is like comparing a LS7 to a 5.3 truck motor. They both do the same thing, as long as the cruise control is set at 55mph. Get it?
Here is what you need to be properly protected (in no order):
- Valentine 1
- Escort Redline
- Escort 9500ix
- Escort 9500i
- Escort 8500 X50
- Bel gx-65
- Bel Rx-65
- Bel Vector 940 - 995 (not the OLD models)
- Bel STi Driver
- Escort 9500ci
- Bel Sti-R
- Escort SR7 /SRX / RX45 / Qi45
The jury is still out on the Escort IQ, it uses a reflector to send signals to an inverted antenna.... I owned one and promptly sold it, did not compare to my others and I disliked the display.

VERY FEW Officers use a "Quick Trigger" method of running radar, not to mention that unit (Stalker DSR2x) is one of the best out. Also, one of the most expensive so many dept cannot afford it.
Next point: A V1 with Ka Gaurd off will pick that up the majority of the time, as will a Bel Sti-r with 2/5/8 settings. S7 based antenna RX-65s will too.
Nice point, but 99% of radar units out there are not capable of that fast of QT. Plus, as a radar unit ages the QT performance decreases, requiring longer durations.
