Default Alternatives to using Pioneer CD changer with Pioneer head unit?

Before anyone goes blasting me about using the Ipod, I already have one, so this is just for information..

Anyway I've been using the Pioneer CDX-P1280 12 disc changer, but after the 1st one failed in 2 yrs, a refurbished one failed after 6 months..

Now this is not with a lot of playtime or bumpy roads etc..

Anyway, I was wondering if there was any way I could control another brand CD changer thru my Pioneer head unit, or if it HAS to be another Pioneer?

If it can't be done, I'll forgo the CD changer, but I kinda like having it.
