I have this radio

Pioneer DEH-P580MP (non-sponsor link removed)

I bought this

along with this

3.5mm stereo to dual RCA cable (non-sponsor link removed)

With the full intension to get ipod to play on my radio and it doesn't work . Everything plugged in perfect but I don't know how to get it to work

turn on the auxilary input. get the manual out or google for it.

Why wouldn't you get the proper Pioneer iPod adapter (CD-IB100II)? I realize it would have cost a little more but it would allow you to control the iPod from the head unit and it charges the iPod battery.

This. Heck, I found on on ebay from a vendor out in China. Took about a week to receive it but it was like $10 shipped.
Plugged into the back of the HU, and I ran the wire under the center console, and stored my iPod under the console lid.
