help! alternator went out. Well my alternator finally crapped out!
What's a good upgrade from stock?
I don't have that many demanding electronics so I know I Probably don't need a 200amp alt. Or do I?
What brand and where would I find one?
I will be putting an overdrive pulley on the new alternator too since I have a 25% underdrive crank pulley.

I replaced a alterstart amp that died recently with a 160 amp one off the self from Advanced Auto parts. To avoid the argument with the counter guy I told him I needed a alternator for a 2004 GMC Sierra 2500 6.0 160 amp. AFTER he fetched it from the shelf and placed it on the counter I told him what it was going in. Just make sure the plug is clocked correctly to work with your LS1. Oh yeah, I already have the yellow top Optima and larger charge back wire in place. Even with the lights on, wipers going, rear defroster going, and defroster on in front with the stereo up it only drops to 13v or so on the dash gauge.

Read the thread that sjsingle1 linked. Then go to fleabay and search for "KG3 alternator". KG3 is the GM RPO code for the 145 amp AD-244 alternator they are talking about. You can get one out of a crashed SUV/truck for about $60 delivered.

Makes more amps at idle than your stock F-body alternator makes at peak, and only goes upward from there. Someone posted an actual output curve somewhere comparing both alternators. I'm running 1350 W RMS worth of stereo gear, and with 35W HID lights, AC running with fans... I never dip below 13V. Make sure you do the "Big 3" wiring during the installation as well.

I actually run a 270XP from them... talk about pricey! I talked to Stan on the phone and he was possibly the most helpful person I've ever talked to about alternators. I've seen too many threads on various forums about people buying low quality "high output" alternators that make practically no power at idle... Wanted to avoid that.
Buying a stock GM AD-244 alternator is definitely better than buying a stock-equivalent, though. For that price, if you're not way into car audio, I would heavily consider that advice.

i just had the same problem and i called a local junk yard for an alt out of a 2005 gmc like the other guy and they said that it is a 145 amp not a 160. will the alt out of the gmc still work on my 2000 z28?
