Bass ALL the time
ive had a system in my 01 ss for a few years now. ive taken it out and put it back in numerous times. Im by no means an expert but i can do a basic install. Anyway, all of a sudden now i have bass coming from the subs all the time. not a little thummp or buzz but goddam thunder attack all the time. Its only when the car is running. if the car is off but stereo on it sounds great but as soon as i start it up it goes ape ****. i had to unplug them because it got to a point where i couldnt put the radio on. Even with volume on zero, its still screaming. A buddy says i need a new headunit since mine is about 6 years old but im pretty sure thats nonsense. Guys, help me out. What happened to my system?

I'd run my RCA cables down one side of the car (passenger) and power down the drivers side. I stashed my sub amp in the area where the spare tire is stored and then the sub sat in a stealthbox on the drivers side.
So my power cable came back along the drivers side, past the back seat, and then straight across the edge under the carpeted area to get over into that spare tire area and meet up with the amp. Then speaker wire ran across the same path (but lower down in the trunk) to get to the stealth box.
I bought the heavier gauge wire because I thought someday I'd like the option of a bigger system, better sound, blah blah blah. Well, turns out that my power cable had more slack in it than I guess it needed and with the larger gauge was heavy enough that it started to slide down into the area under the carpet where the t-tops get stored in the trunk. (where I'd run the speaker wire back to the sub) So I'd be driving along when that power wire would work its way down and start to sort of sag off the hatch under the carpet - it got closer than I'd intended to the speaker wire - and just about blew me out of the car. ("pull over like a maniac and yank power to sub after small heart attack" blow me out of the car)
I had a ground that I replaced that helped me with a little feedback issue I had - and at first I thought that was the problem, but then it happened again. That's when I realized the wire had "walked" down into the trunk again after I'd already tucked it back up once. Those two wires coming too close in the back really made my sub go banshee. I think I ended up using plastic ties to anchor it higher up where I intended it to sit. 2 years later - it's still all good - so the anchor seems to have fixed the problem.
