Default Auto headlight delete

So I finally had enough of not being able to turn my headlights off. So I got under the dash pad and cut the wires going to the light sensor. I crossed them and used a wire nut and electrical tape to secure it. Works great but sometimes when I start my car all my lights will still come on and go out within a minute if I don't turn the headlight switch on. Any ideas?

check the lighting FAQ thread, there should be a write-up on how to do this.

Sounds like you don't have the connection done right.

Wire nuts have no place in a car.

I'm curious... how would that affect auto-headlights?

Yeah can't see the reason either. I know on GTO's the DRLs differed between manual and auto but not the auto lights.

I don't see how it matters but it is a M6.

Based on what I read from your posts on here , auto headlights can be disabled by unplugging the plug that goes to right small box(size of cigerettes pack) behind the radio.

If you have a m6 the hatch release button doesn't work, a4 is fine.

I tried this on my a4 and it works.

You're right... I did say that and that is definitely a difference between A4 and M6. But my point at the time was that it's better to make modifications with the fewest side effects. Shorting the two sensor wires together duplicates the way GM disabled automatic headlights in US Firebird models and has no side effects at all. Even in an automatic, unplugging the DRL module disables the brake warning light in the instrument cluster (although it doesn't affect the hatch release as it does with a manual transmission). Try it - pulling on your parking brake will not cause the warning light to turn on.

However, there is a much easier and better way to short the sensor wires than cutting them and using a wire nut. Simply crimping a ScotchLock connector across the two wires will short them together with no cutting and is easily reversible by just removing the connector.
