Default Stereo Upgrade Time

I bought the car with the Monsoon HU ripped out and a really crappy Pioneer in its place (tho I've run Pioneer in three previous cars and all sounded better than this one). The speakers were replaced and the Monsoon amp is gone. It's a horrible system, whatever it is. And it's time to replace it.

I was thinking of going with something like a Double DIN touchscreen unit, but I don't need that. Though I wouldn't mind the backup camera add-ons for such a thing. Mainly, what I'm looking at is a good system. So far I've come up with two separate upgrade "packages":

1) DoubleD Mods:
Double DIN Kenwood DDX-471HD Package with Kenwood PAC swi-RC and Pyle Backup Camera
Hybrid Audio Clarus 6.5" Component Speaker System
Hybrid Audio Mirus 2-way Speakers
Arc Audio ARC 10 Preloaded 10" Subwoofer Stealth Box 2-Ohm DVC
Massive Audio NX5 5-Channel Amplifier

2) Kee Audio:
JVC KD-R840BT head unit (single DIN)
CDT Audio EU-61CV.2 component set
CDT Audio EU-6MB.2
10" stealth enclosure with Massive Audio NEO10 D4 DVC 4ohm 10" sub
Audiopipe APSM-55100 Amplifier
Wiring Kit
Hushmat

Price difference is about $500 between the two. The Kee Audio solution is complete, but the DD Mods stuff is much higher end.

What do you guys think?

I have always liked the way a double DIN looks like it belongs in the dash compared to a single DIN with a mounting kit. And Kenwood makes some really nice head units. My vote is option #1.

I agree. The single din with the adapter kit just looks wrong. Touch screen is nice. Research them though. And watch for ipod controls. I got one and it was compatible with my i4s, but not my i5s when i upgraded. So i did all this extra wiring so i could have no cables and it hooks up in my console for nothing really.

Okay. Yeah the Double DIN is pretty high on my list. What about the speakers? I had done research on the Arc 10 sub and that's a really good subwoofer. And the Hybrid Audio components are really good components. If I'm after really great sound, it seems like this is the way to go?

Those are not bad packages... I'm looking at the double d mods, kenwood ddx-5901hd package. I like the feature when your phone (either android or iphone) is connected, it mirrors the phone to the unit's display. Probably going to be a fall winter project for me.

My only dealing with double d mods is I have their trunk sub box in my 5th gen Camaro...Pretty good quality...Dennis is good people.

You should use the search and the feedback section to research the sellers before buying.

Yup, I would do that. Kee Audio has 21 positive reviews and two resolved issues listed although one member apparently won't let it go at that. There's not much information about Double D Mods (one positive, one negative and one resolved issue).

I have dealt with both sponsors personally and found them both to be good people, honest and very knowledgeable. People who know me know that I don't play the politically correct game and haven't hesitated to call out a sponsor (or member) when needed so I'm not just following the "company line". But please, feel free to check it out yourselves.

IMO, nice single DIN headunits can be had for a good price, especially Kenwood or Pioneer, and when mounted in a HUmount mounting kit it mounts flush so it looks good!
You can even get them with a lighted logo like Firebird, TransAm, or a custom logo as a option it you want. They cost more than the typical mount, but they're built a lot better!

BTW, if you want to piece together a nice system I'll gladly help you out!

That's pretty trick!

The reason I'd like the Double DIN is to have the touchscreen/backup camera/integrated NAV.

Tho, I will say, in the newer Fords where everything is touchscreen based... I hate it. You have to take your eyes off the road...

Ford has had so many complaints and bad reviews of their My Ford Touch system that they announced recently that new models would come with real buttons and switches for the common controls such as HVAC and audio. My wife's Edge has MFT and we both still hate it after 18 months of trying to get used to it.

The Kenwood you listed is a nice unit with a real volume **** and other controls on the left side. But it does not include built-in navigation. The equivalent model with nav would be the DNX571HD.

I am completely new to the whole stereo game.

I am really interested in your setup. I have an 01 Camaro SS...

I'm on the Crutchfield website and when I enter my car information in, it says that the DDX-471HD will not fit...

Is this an issue? How is this circumvented?

Crutchfield is too literal. They are correct that a double DIN will not fit without some other changes. But simply replacing the trim bezel (or modifying your own) and the usual wiring harness adapter, etc. will make it work quite nicely.

Do a search for "double DIN" to find all kinds of threads about installation and the pieces you'll need.
