Default Which 6.5 is better?

I want to give my stereo a little boost with keeping my stock h/u so I was planning on a Alpine KTP-445U Power Pack. Is one of these speakers better in the rear sail panels?

CDT Audio HD-65NX HD Series Slim 6.5" 2-way Coaxial Speaker or

Polk db651

Thank you.

If you are keeping the factory head unit (the primary source of distortion and the cause of the Monsoon system's negative reputation) then why replace the factory 200W amp with an aftermarket 180W amp? You won't gain any power and you will change the sound significantly because you will be removing bass (sail panel subs) and substituting full range coaxial speakers that put higher frequencies behind you - terrible for sound stage and imaging.

even without a monsoon, a 2-way is NEVER suggested in the sail location.

Would you suggest something? I guess whatever is in the sails is original. Something for regular bass not sub bass please? Or shouldI just leave them and put the amp in? Thanks for your help.

Sorry, I deal with Monsoon so much I sometimes forget that not all of the cars came with it.

The base factory system has four full-range speakers located in the doors and sail panels. The door speakers are 4-ohm while the sail panel speakers are 10-ohm. That difference restricts power to the rear speakers so that they become rear fill rather than a primary sound source. It's not an ideal solution but it works okay especially if you like the "surround" sound experience.

10-ohm speakers are very uncommon and almost impossible to find in the aftermarket but you can accomplish the same effect by careful use of the fader control on the head unit. Another option would be to install 8-ohm speakers in the sail panels but I think the fader option is much simpler.

Still, it wouldn't hurt to get something other than coaxial speakers for the sail panel. The added high frequency reproduction of the tweeter will only serve to emphasize the fact that the sound is coming from behind (higher frequencies are more directional than lower frequencies).

To answer your specific question, the CDT is the better speaker overall but much more expensive. The Polk would be more than sufficient for the power you plan to use.

Thank you for taking the time to explain that to me. the car is also a convertible so I only have two door speakers and the sail panel speakers. I don't expect sound like an aftermarket head unit but am I wasting my money with the factory unit which I really want to keep?

The Delco factory head unit creates a lot of distortion, especially at higher volume settings. However, many people want to retain the factory appearance and won't give up the factory head unit. Your idea of adding the Alpine Power Pack is a good compromise. It allows you to boost the total output volume (very important in a convertible) without having to turn up the HU volume into the range where the distortion gets really bad. That said, I still would not spend too much money on speakers because high end speakers won't perform to their full capabilities with only marginal input signal clarity. The Polk speakers are fairly efficient (sensitive) so they should produce good volume, they're heavy duty (marine grade) so they should hold up well even with some level of distortion, and they're not overly expensive. I think the extra quality of the CDT speakers would be lost in a convertible with factory head unit so they probably aren't worth the extra cost in this situation.

FYI, convertibles don't have sail panels. The term "sail panel" refers to the way the large pillar behind the doors resembles a sail. Without the "sail", the panel is just called a quarter panel.
