So if you factory ordered a 12 disk CD changer for a 2002 SS you would recieve a tape deck with an external 12 disk changer correct? The head unit doesn't play CD's?

No, for the 02 the changer would work with either the cassette or CD head unit. You would get the type of head unit you want and then add the changer option. Only models prior to mid-99 required the cassette head unit in order to use the CD changer.

So you could order the CD head unit with the 12 disk CD changer from the factory on an 02 SS?

EDIT:
I found a good source of information about LS1s. It was in jrp's sig.

My 2000 WS6's 500 watt Monsoon crushes my 1999 SS' s 200 watt Monsoon...hands down. Hell the non-monsoon system in my 1998 Z28 has 100 times the bass that the 200 watt Monsoon in the SS has. I find it VERY hard to believe that the two systems are pretty much the same!

The head units are pretty much the same. In fact, the so-called Monsoon head unit is just an ordinary Delco radio (with extra Monsoon markings in later models) that is completely interchangeable with most 1.5 DIN GM radios. The differences are all in the amp and speakers.

You didn't contradict me....at least I dont think so.
The headunits are almost the same (slight changes over the years). The real difference is the amp and speakers. BTW, it seems that the Firebird got better speakers than the Camaro.

Here is some additional info:
