Default What voltage should I read at the exciter wire?

My alternator is reading below 13 on my dash and 12.7 at the battery. My exciter wire is reading 6.7 volts. I was under the impression that a normal exciter wire voltage was around 8 volts. Could that be why my voltage is reading low?
