if the problem is in the wiring or the device that reads the key at the ignition lock
this procedure will check it.I suggest a key with no resistor so that if its not the wiring or reader
then you wont double the resistor value.This is much easier than tearing into steering column
and cutting wires just for diagnosis.Good Luck
BTW, there is no need to get a new key with no resistor pellet when doing a VATS bypass with a resistor. The common practice is to insert the resistor(s) between the wires at the connector at the base of the steering column but if you really wanted to go to the trouble of doing the same thing at the BCM connector (I don't know why), simply unplugging the connector at the steering column (the two white wires in the orange sheathing) removes the ignition cylinder and key from the circuit. However, the OP has already stated that a bypass is not the desired resolution.
