I did a search and couldn't find any. I am putting in a new head unit and want to see how others sealed the gap in the dash from the larger stock unit. I could just use a piece of black plastic but wanted to get some ideas for something more creative. Thanks guys.

Go to your local stereo shop, or if there isn't one, Circuit City, or Best Buy and get a Radio Installation kit. Make sure that you get it for the proper year and model vehicle. It will allow fitment of your deck nicely with a black plastic ABS front. You probably also are going to need a wiring adapter for the factory wiring (to allow connection to the factory wires without cutting into them), and a GM antenna adapter.

The stereo is mounted in a box I made between the two rear seats. I was out testing it today and man oh man it is awesome.

Nice job glassing that in, Gev. Where are your HVAC controls, and do you just use a remote to access all your stereo controls? Do you have a remote head unit mounted anywhere?

Follow the link to his site:

He says it all there.
The headunit is in a custom "armrest" between the rear seats and the HVAC controls are in the glovebox. At least, thats according to what's on his site.

I am waiting for the last piece to come from the paint shop and I will take some final pictures of it.
I mounted the headunit between the two rear seats for easy access just in case I need it.
As far as sealing it away from the elements, do you mean the screen or the computer. The computer itself is quite protected as no moisture can get in there. However it does get hot sometimes, but I have 7 fans in there including one that blows in cold air to the case area. The screen has its own fan as well which helps in cooling it and the controller board in the hot sun. The screen is as sealed away from the elements as the stock headunit and HVAC are. I have been driving it around these last few days and no problems have come up.
Thank you all for the interest.
PS. making that damn dash piece was a total bitch. lol
If any of you guys are wanting to do this, it costs about 500-600 depending on the components you choose to use. If you are in need of components pertaining to the computer, I can help you out in that department...

Don't bitch. The final product is worth the effort. I was going to go the lazy man's way and just get a preconfigured solution. What PS did you use? Is there one available that takes the car DC voltage and converts it to the 12V/5V needed for components? I'd rather not use an adapter.

There is a power supply made by Opus that uses the 12V from the car, but its $180 90 watts with about a 6 week backorder. You can find some used ones on mp3car.com. It really is a good PS because it allows for automatic shutdown and startup. Because of the price and backorder I am using a power inverter to convert to 110. A little inefficient, but it works well.
Im not bitching though lol. I love the end product.

I've got a question for you, Gev. Why keep the factory head unit at all? A PCI radio tuner card would work just as well, and you'd reclaim some of your interior space as well. Just a thought.

I'm keeping the factory headunit because it's cheaper to do so. If I was to get rid of it, I'd need to run an amp and rewire all the speakers, etc. I will eventually do this though as the stock speakers leave much to be desired.
